Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999.

Can you believe this is my 40th blog! What a great place to blog about as well. It's been a fabulous weekend in Vienna. Not really a fan of the 4am rise to catch the plane but it was well worth it. This time there was 7 of us. Clare, Emma, Jenny, Stephanie, Sharaneya, Tina and Me. As soon as we landed we dropped our stuff at the hotel and headed straight to the christmas markets, or should I say "Christkindlmärkte. On nearly every corner of the city. Small huts provide you with potential Christmas presents, food and most important hot [View Full Entry]

Day 14 -  Europe » Austria » Vienna State » Vienna
Day 14 Two weeks ago, when I heard the work “Hungary”, my thoughts immediately rushed down to soothe grumblings in my belly. My mind did not visualize former commie outposts, novice lap dancers in the early stages of perfecting their trade or visualize old hags wrapped in babushkas. Rather, it was on a big juicy, satisfying Licks burger, smothered in cheddar cheese, plastered with a thick coating of garlic sauce and dripping with ‘oh so tasty’ grease. Journeying to the edge of western civilization was not one of my priorities, thus I never considered the countr [View Full Entry]

It has been almost a month since I last blogged, so I will try to sum it all up somewhat briefly. The weekend after visiting Tübingen, I met three friends in Madrid for three days. All three friends are students whom I know from DU, but are studying in Europe this semester. One is in Madrid, one in Malaga (south Spain), and the other in Athens, Greece. We all agreed to meet in Madrid because it was a place that my friend in Greece and I had never been to, and the other two were already living there. In Madrid we [View Full Entry]

London to Vienna ( By Car)-on the Cheap We recently visited Austria and decided to drive there. Oh boy !! what a delight, London to Vienna in 24 hours by car. Sat Nav says !! London-France-Belgium-Holland-Germany-Austria- we arrive full of caffeine, but we’re here.Motorways were good, more importantly we avoided driving through much of France and so didn’t have to pay any toll-charges which are quite costly there- never give a frog a bone. Motorway petrol stations are expensive 25%-30% more for Unleaded than back home, Diesels about the same. We We’re in Austria, [View Full Entry]

Business & Pleasure in Vienna One of the advantages of being an Israeli traveling abroad is the uniqueness of our language. Nobody besides us understands it, which allows us to freely communicate among ourselves and, to be totally honest, we sometimes abuse this to gossip about others. Shame on us. Our worst nightmare is therefore making a nasty remark about someone who happens to understand Hebrew. It happened to me once in Peru where a French girl we didn’t like so much (and uttered that quite openly...) turned out to be a Jewish girl who's been to Israel and speaks fluent [View Full Entry]

In two months exactly, I leave Vienna. It feels slightly unreal that I have lived here for more than two months already, and looking back on it, I have enjoyed every day. I have traveled to other cities, attended concerts and performances, gone rollerblading on the Donau Insel, had Sturm and roast pork legs at local Heuriger, and of course attended class during the week at the institute. Last Sunday morning, I attended a concert of the Wiener Philharmoniker, one of the most famous and respected orchestras in the world. The concert was held in the Vienna Musikverein, which is known [View Full Entry]

All in Fourteen Days By: Jim Collins On June 8, fourteen people meet at the Kings Hotel in Budapest. A few knew each other casually but many had never met. Two weeks later we were dear friends having shared the beauty and majesty of Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and Prague. But most important we developed wonderful friendships, had a lot of laughs, good times and really got to know and appreciate each other. It would be boring to travel with normal people. You want to travel with interesting people to interesting places. Budapest is an absolutely beautiful city in which every other [View Full Entry]

We arrived in the home of red bull... one straight shot of redbull straight up for andy and a cream puff for jen... We settled into wombats hostel and then it was off to dinner... Being Austria we had schnitzels for din dins! Jen Jen had chicken and Andy had Turkey... The restaurant was full up and there was only one waitress on the floor... she was super amazing and there were no waits only a couple of forgotten, or slow, drinks... For 6 Euros each we had a salad, a schnitzel, fries and a shot of frangelico! What a bargain! [View Full Entry]

I woke up to loud wind this morning, like I have the last four mornings, except today I looked out of the window and saw snow! It has been sleeting/snowing all day today, and does not appear to be letting up at all. The last few days unfortunately have been overcast and windy, not my ideal Fall weather by any means. When the temperatures began to drop at the end of last week, I was very excited for the cold weather to arrive. We were very fortunate to have such warm weather our first two months here, but I think everyone [View Full Entry]
