The Sahara Hotnights song got me inspired, so now I'm at a hostel in Vienna and after two days of walking and biking around town my legs won't carry me any further. So I'm just staying in, maybe I'll go for a beer in the hostel bar in a while.
I left home Monday morning and after 23 hours of train-riding I walked out of Westbahnhof, blinking in the Vienna sun. I'd then gone from Goteborg via Copenhagen, with the train onto the ferry from Rodby to Puttgarten. After a ten minute stop in Hamburg I got onto the night train to Vienna where I shared a cabin with three Danes, and two austrian women. If I'd felt lonely before, worried about not meeting people, I certainly didn't feel very lonely any more.. To say it was crammed is a bit of an understatement, at first I was wondering if I would have to sleep with my backpack on the very narrow bed (now there's an overstatement..), but it actually fit underneath. A bit of an adventure I must say, but I slept pretty good, rocking with the movements of the train. One of the austrian ladies was very sweet and
gave me lots of tips of things to see in town and even offered to take me to Prater, which is a big park pretty close to Donau - it has the famous ferris wheel which has become a symbol for the city. So yesterday evening I met up with Roswitha and her husband Gerhard - a very sweet couple who took me for beers, weisswurst and pretzls in the Prater. We then took a ride on the ferris wheel to look at Vienna by night from above. Very nice I must say.
Today I rented a bicycle and went to Donau and Donauinsel, which is a man made strip of land in the river. Apparently it lowers the flooding risks, or something like that. I went much further than I intended, but it was great to feel the wind in my hair and the sun in my face, until I had to hurry back and got lost in the Vienna traffic. But with my map close at hand I was alright, with 3 minutes to spare!
I like Vienna, it has lots and lots of beautiful buildings, parks, churches, palaces... I wish I had more time to explore the
museums and the rest of the town.
Tomorrow I'm off to Hungary to meet my friend Vanessa who's been a guest here in my travel blog a few years back... We're going to a festival by the lake Balaton and then spend a few days in Budapest. More on that next time!
PS. I'm trying to upload pictures, but the battery on my camera is empty. Next time!
