This was a nice, relaxing weekend! Friday night I went to the Blaserphilharmonie concert in the Grosse Saal. I was actually supposed to play in this concert but I'm glad I didn't! It's a long story...The concert was nice. Benjamin Schmidt, a violinist on faculty at the Mozarteum, played a concerto and he was incredible! After the concert we went for a drink at Weizzz on Theatregasse, just down the street from the hall. As it turned out, they were having karaoke that night! I ended up singing the Baywatch song with somebody. It was fun but it was pretty bad! A couple of other guys sang and one of the trombonists and trumpet players got out their instruments and started accompanying them. Sounded much better than the singing 😊
We have been having some really great weather the past week or so but I was stuck in rehearsals all last week and didn't really get to enjoy it. Bente and I had been wanting to go to St. Wolfgang for a while now, so we decided Saturday would be a good day for it. The bus that we needed to take stops at the Mozarteum so we decided to
meet at school just before 9:00am. My alarm went off around 8am or so on Saturday morning but when I woke up I honestly didn't know what day it was (I haven't really known what day it is for the past two or three weeks because things have been so busy and I don't really have a regular schedule) and I decided to stay in bed for a few more minutes. The next thing I knew, Bente was calling me! A few minutes had turned into 45 min! It was 8:42am and the bus was leaving at 9:15! I also live about 12-20 min by bus or bike from school! I jumped out of bed, showered, gathered my stuff, and somehow made it out my door in 10 min. The bus stop is probably a 5-7 minute walk from where I live so I literally ran from the moment I stepped out of my door. When I got outside it felt like a slap in the face. It was freeeeezing and I was still warm from having just woken up and showering. I got to the corner and I saw my bus sitting at the stop. Yes!!!! But then I
got half way down the street and the bus left! Noooooooo!!!! I couldn't take my bike because the tires were flat and I didn't have a pump yet. It was going to be another 10 minutes until the same number bus came by. I jumped on another bus so I would at least be headed in the right direction and I could just mix and match the buses to get to school. I finally got on the right bus but then it just sat at the stop for about 5 minutes. Come on! Finally it got going and Bente called to tell me the bus to St. Wolfgang was running about 5 min. late. I got to Mirabellplatz and the bus was just getting to the stop. I couldn't believe I actually made it! Phew! Crazy start to the morning!
We had to switch buses somewhere along the way. I think it took under two hours to get there and it was a beautiful drive! The weather was pretty chilly but it felt really nice in the sun. The town had a Christmas Market so that was a nice surprise! We were pretty hungry when we got there so
we walked around to find something to eat first. We ended up going to one of the stands in the market. We had potato soup in a bread bowl. It was so delicious and perfect for a cold day. They day was spent wandering around the town and doing some shopping at the Christmas Market. We went to a little store and tasted several different liquors and schnapps. We went into the Church of St. Wolfgang which is said to be one of the most important Christian monuments in Austria. It was gorgeous! Unfortunately we were not allowed to take pictures but I did get a couple of postcards and a pamphlet about the church. There was a great view of the lake from behind the church so we sat there for a while to enjoy it. We thought it would be nice to take the boat to the other side of the lake but it was going to be a little too expensive and we didn't have a whole lot of time. We stopped for lunch (spaghetti bolognese) and then explored the rest of the town and did some more browsing/shopping. We enjoyed a cup of yummy hot chocolate
by the lake and we got to keep the Christmas mug! Before we knew it we needed to head back to catch the bus. There were going Christmas lights out on the lake and some sort of Advent event later in the evening but we were hoping to make it back to Salzburg to catch a show. We were so tired by the time we got on the bus and I think we slept the whole way back. It seemed so late because it gets dark so early, about 4pm, but it was only about 6pm.
When we got back to school we ran into Alex, another horn player, and he invited us to his place for tea. He's really into tea and makes it very well. We hung out at his place for a while, drinking tea, eating lebkuchen that I had bought at St. Wolfgang, and listening to music. We decided we were too tired to go to the show, it was some sort of Salsa thing, so we grabbed a pizza at Reyna and then called it a night.
