Rosenhof and our hosts
Us with Katherine and Robert, our hosts Time to move on from Salzburg. It's another lovely day so we filled in the time until pickup by doing a circuit of the river and as we arrived back the driver taking us to Ebensee (Aybensee) had arrived. It was a hour and a half's journey in one very hot vehicle as the air conditioning only worked in the front. We thought that running the inside vehicle temperature at 35 would be a good practice for the Froudes going to Bangkok! However, despite the heat, the driver was friendly and informative. He eventually found the address at Ebensee and it seemed we wound our way through the whole town. On reflection, we did because we're at the back end from the lake.
We're now settled into Gasthof Rosenhof which is a large modern guest house run by a lovely accommodating young English couple. We have 3 rooms upstairs, a large bedroom/lounge, a spare room and an ensuite. Also a balcony to sit out on. The host, Robert, settled us in with a drink and some lunch, sorted out some bikes and steered us off down the lake for a practice run to Traunkirchen (Trownkirken).
We set off on
Rosenhof Gasthaus
A wonderful place to stay. the streets but once down at Traunsee (Lake Traun) we were on a wide paved cycle path. The path was well signed for just cycling, part of which was on the old road before the tunnels were put in. We could blat along with little effort at all. Now, that's what I call cycling. Our bikes are okay with 27 gears but the seats definitely need a change to gel seats if we're doing 60km tomorrow. They are basically mountain bikes and not as comfortable as our home bikes, but I do like all the gears 😊. We need them at Tasman with all the hills there.
We biked a little further than Traunkirchen to Winkl where we found a restaurant on the lake front and had tea and apricot cake. It was a lovely setting and hard to imagine it had been flooded a few days ago.
Biking back we did a little exploring and walked up to a small chapel on a hill. Back where we had parked our bikes there were monuments to something but our mostly non existent German didn't help us figure what it was about. Along the coast is a statue of
a huge lion and a coat of arms and across the road is an old covered grotto now set up for picnics with Franz Josef written over it. Must research this one.
Back in Ebensee we got lost finding the guest house, but eventually got there. We went down for pre dinner drinks in the lounge and met our fellow guests, Lindy and JP from Arizona, USA. They've done heaps of biking in various places and are interesting to talk to. They've arrived from Larry's at Obertraun where we go to in a few days and said we'll love it - the food is amazing as Larry is a chef. 😊
So ends day one in Ebensee. I wonder what Robert and Cathrine have lined up for us tomorrow?
