Innsbruck not Innsbrook The Day After Christmas and All is Still Closed After checking out of Fussen yesterday, we took the quick hour and a half trip to Innsbruck in the middle of western Austria. Innsbruck’s main claim to fame in winter is the skiing. Because it is high season for skiing, e. g. between Christmas and New Years, the town has a ton of tourists. We arrived and checked in by 11am and set out about the town. From the hotel we have a short five minute walk to the old town of Innsbruck which is directly on the Inn River. As we arrived in the main part of old town we were surprised to find the Christmas Market still open. We had been told that Christmas Markets in the region close on the ... read more

DAY 6: Christmas Eve! YEY! Usually this would be one of the most EXCITING nights of the year for me, i absolutely LOVE Christmas! However, this year, being in Europe and away from the fam it strangely doesnt have that christmasy ring to it. Anyways we are driving from Switzerland to Austria today, via one of the smallest countries in the world - Liechtenstein. We enjoy another sleep in up atop the clouds and make a nice lazy start to the bus at 9am. Good bye Beautiful Swiss alps, we will miss you lots! Anyway we dont have a very long drive today however we do cross a whole country before we hit the Austrian border. Liechtenstein takes only 25mins to drive from one side to the other and is home to its very own Prince ... read more

Hello all. I am now writing from Austria. After a short stay in Berlin, unsuccessful in terms of jobs, we headed down here to see what is available on the skiing resorts. We made the shocking decision of hiring a car - it went against the grain after being so environmentally friendly on our bikes, but train journeys are incredibly complex. So, we loaded it up with large amounts of stuff (how we ever fitted it all on our bikes is a mystery to me; but then, that was before we owned a large piano accordion) and spent the day driving south. It was a bit of a miserable journey as we had no idea where we would go, what accomodation we could find and whether jobs would be available. All has worked out remarkably well. ... read more

After a long time waiting we finally got to the place where shiny crystals are made!! There was also alot more to see in this little city of Innsbruck so we stayed for a few days. We went for a walk through the old town and saw the house with the golden roof - how spectacular!!HaHa. Then we found the biggest retail store of Swarovski with a beautiful Christmas exhibition. It was nothing compared to the when we arrived at Kristelwelten! We spent a little bit of time here and alot of money!!! There was the giants cave to explore and then a huge shop at the end. Wow what fun!! We did leave though to do a little exploring. We even went to the Alpin Zoo to see some wolves and bears. There wasnt many ... read more

Our first stop in Innsbruck was the Bergisel Ski Jump, home to both the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics. It was overpriced for sure - 8.30 Euro per person plus 3.40 to park your car - but interesting nonetheless. The views of the city from the top of the platform were incredible. It was also quite windy up there as you can see from the photos. I cannot imagine launching myself off on skis from that height! Schloss Ambras is a castle just outside the city built in the 11th century and acquired by Archduke Ferdinand II in 1564. We spent an hour walking through the Spanish Hall, armour collection, portrait gallery (of the Hapsburgs), and the "Art and Wonders Collection." This was definitely worth visiting, allows photos, and we even got a discount because it ... read more

As you can see from the title, we are back in Austria again. Left Germany (Munich) this morning and caught the fast train down to Innsbruck. We had a bit of a hiccup in our travel plans last night when we tried to book a place to stay in Lucerne, Switzerland. We were up til late on the net and ringing around but couldnt find any vacancies there. So, we decided to backtrack a bit down here to Innsbruck. Glad we did, the railway down from Munich was absolutely fantastic. We thought we had seen it all on our trip from Salzburg to Zell-am-See, but today surpassed that. Today the "Wow" factor set in well and truly, oohs and aahs as we moved from one side of the carriage to the other. (Might add here that ... read more

Hi all, Once again I know its been a while but the time we are getting on the net is very limited. Last time I wrote I was Barcelona. Another great spot. It's a pretty dodgy area and a few people in our group had items stolen. Apart from that it's a very nice. We went to a Spanish dance night. It was loads of fun but for the second time in a matter of days I was called on stage and had to do a 30 second dance with a nice Spanish lady. It was a great laugh but as I got off the MC told me, 'never again'. I dealt with that by going to my table and having some Sangria. We followed by attending a bar in Barcelona. I think Barcelona has the ... read more

Nor Vienna or Salzburg. Halfway though my European Tour, I’m starting to realize my budget tour, does not take in many major cities in many of the countries to be visited. For example, Austria will cover Innsbruck, but not Vienna or Salzburg, Italy to cover Verona and Venice, but not Rome, Florence, Milan and Pisa and Switzerland to cover Lucerne, but not Geneva and Zurich. At least Paris will be covered in France, though. Being from an island in the middle of the Pacific, I sort of assume, being in a country would automatically cover all major cities, not taking into account, it takes more than a couple of hours to get from one city to another, like it would on an island. Well, I really have no one to blame but myself for not studying ... read more

Well the count down to coming home is on. Everyone is making the best of the last couple days and snapping pictures like crazy. last you guys heard i was in romania and since then i have been to hungary, germany and austria. Hungary was a quick stop but beautiful. They call it the Paris of the east and they light up there most beautiful buildings at night just like paris. We spent the day wandering around looking at monuments and a museum called the Terror museum which so far has been my favourite. Its all about the occupation of hungary by the nazi and the soviets so it was very intense. At night we did a group dinner. It was a dinner cruise on a big boat going past all the major attractions. The food ... read more
