Today we drove to the lovely Austrian Tyrol, to Hall in Tyrol near Innsbruck. Gorgeous blue sky for a gorgeously scenic drive. First of all we drove along the lake, West towards Lienz where we could have taken a route via Italy and the Dolomites but opted for the Austrian Alps instead. Then to Mittersil, north to Kitzbuhel and St Johann in Tyrol. Last stretch was West to Innsbruck via Worgl. We went over mountains, round mountains, through a couple and were for almost all of the day surrounded by the most stunning scenery. Mountains in every direction, snow topped often, rocky crags, fields full of wild flowers, Heidi chalets bedecked with bright flowers, waterfalls tumbling down the mountain sides, cows with bells a jangling, deep valleys, ski resorts and chair lifts, villages and towns nestling ... read more

Cusco and your correspondent have been left to their own devices for a week, in Munich, during Oktoberfest, what could they possibly get up to??? Well dear readers. Let me sum up the first adventures encountered in the first three days in one word – nothing. When, I say nothing, I mean nothing – nyet, rien, nada, zilch…. It poured with rain, torrents for hour after hour after hour. Claude was beginning to sink under the deluge. Cusco had to swim to higher ground when he needed to perform ablutions. My concern was of the water rising enough to threaten my beer supply, now that would have been bad. On checking in at the campsite, Wendy had to sign an undertaking that we would not complain about any excess noise. This was unusual as usually we ... read more

The word hall in medieval times translated to salt. I have had a fascination with salt ever since my Father made me a model of a salt mine as a Christmas gift. “Hall's Old Town is the mother of all medieval city centers.” Like Luebeck in Northern Germany loved how the streets meandered one into the other past church spires and brick works a thousand years old now holding either a hair salon, bakery or paper shop. “The two marvellous squares and the labyrinthine layout of the side streets are unique in the world.” I walked from my hotel, Gasthof Badl, on the other side of the River to the cemetery past an active convent. In the cemetery I spied a nun caring for the sisters laid to rest in the cemetery. A baker advertised strudel ... read more

So, to escape the hustle and bustle of mega metropolis Innsbruck (ha!), we took a half day trip to Hall in Tirol. When researching the Tirol country side, I kept stumbling upon nice reviews of this little suburb 10 minutes away from Innsbruck. It's not a particularly historic town, nor a unique one by any means, but it looked like a good place to spread out for a few hours. Especially since I wanted to combine a mix of well-visited cities and lesser-known villages while touring Austria. One thing that I noticed while researching Tirol a few months ago was the incredible quaintness of each and every town in Austria. It made it difficult to choose where to go, and why. Each and every settlement - whether it's Innsbruck, a thriving town on the river, or ... read more
