Guten Tag! Hopefully today will be my last day having to go to an internet place. Tomorrow after school I'm going to book it down to Jakominiplatz where the housing office is, so hopefully by tomorrow night (afternoon for all of you, except Natalie, of course), I'll be able to put up my pictures so you can finally see what I'm talking about! I forgot to mention yesterday one of the most fun parts of the day. When we all met in the Hauptplatz to climb to the top of the Schloßberg (by the way, ß in German is ss, so it's pronounced Schlossberg), we all had our assignments, and we all brought a little something to have a picnic at the top overlooking the city. We found a place about 3/4 of the way up ... read more
I'm back in the computer place and am going to first excuse myself is I sound a little annoyed at the moment. There's a man sitting right behind me talking through a webcam and SCREAMING in Slovene. The owner, a nice little Indian woman, doesn't really know what to do 'cause you can't even hear yourself think he's screaming so loud. I might just turn around and deck him, haven't quite decided yet. Anywho, since we last spoke, I went on a little adventure, in an attempt to find a place that might sell an adapter. Like I said, since it's Sonntag, just about everything is closed. I did have to get some questions answered, though, for homework, and was also looking for a bakery, as I needed to find what something called a Sessel was ... read more
Servus alle! I'm writing again from another internet place, but hopefully will have the internet in my room by Monday. It's been a lot of running around, taking care of banking, and getting signatures and things, all useless, just to get the stupid internet. My roommate, though, finally got his this morning, so hopefully I can go on his computer now and again until I get it set up. Things are good here, finally getting a feel for the place, don't walk around with my map in my pocket anymore, which is a great feeling. We've been learning a lot more Austrian in my class, too, so we can start to talk more like locals and not have people immediately switch into English with us. We spend about 2 hours everyday conducting class in Hochdeutsch, which ... read more
Believe What You've Heard About Eastern Europe
Published: September 4th 2008Europe » Austria » Styria » GrazServus! I'm writing right now on Thursday at about 4 o'clock from an internet cafe. WHAT A FREAKIN' TRIP IT'S BEEN! Eastern Europe is trying to kill me, that's the long and short of it. The flight went well, took off from Boston about 45 minutes late but that was no biggie. Actually took off from the same terminal that I left from to go to Spain, which was kinda funny. The flight was standard, though, lots of study abroad kids, mostly on their way to Spain, though. Watched Made of Honor which was actually surprisingly entertaining. Sorrz if there are spelling mistakes, the keyboard is different here. The Frankfurt airport was exactly as Grampi described it, and we got there at about 6 in the morning. I decided to grab a tea to keep me ... read more

Two quick things: I don't recommend calling me, as it's wicked expensive, but here's the number of "mein Handy" (my cell phone): (0043)(0)676 313 4128 Looks like a bad math problem to me. Second thing: HAPPY 23RD BIRTHDAY, HILLARY!!!!... read more
It was about 7.30pm when we drove back into Austria and the difference in the countryside and towns was instantly noticeable. Everything looked tidier and more organized, the towns had footpaths and the shops didn’t have bars. There was no litter in the streets and the houses looked loved - it felt good to be back. We found a campsite on the map at a little town called Jennersdorf which was about 20km from the Hungarian border and 10km from the Slovinian border. The campsite was worth a mention because it was the cleanest and best maintained place we have stayed at to date and after coming from Hungary was quite refreshing. We decided to stay 2 nights and just chill out before heading to Ferd’s place. We arrived back in Passail on Thursday and ... read more
Hello! I'm back in Austria and cannot believe it. Liebe Grüße Sue... read more
A week on Pig Hill - Adventures in the Austrian countryside
Published: March 28th 2012Europe » Austria » Styria » GrazWell when you last heard from me I was headed to Graz to meet up with an Austrian friend of mine named Kathi, whom I had met not long after arriving in Cairns thirteen months ago... So after checking out of my hostel in Vienna (tuesday 12th August) I took a metro into the centre of town, then another metro to the Südbahnhof (south train station) for my three-hour train ride to Graz in the south-east of Austria - where unfortunately within ten minutes of arriving I had copped a fine of sixty euros ($100 AUD) for riding a tram from the train station into the main square without a ticket - which of course Kathi had managed to do for the last two years without ever getting caught! Once Kathi had arrived we dumped my ... read more
The hotel where Ferd works is 2½ hours away but he had very kindly decided to take the week off to show us around his home town, so after a breakfast of sliced meats, bread, cheese and coffee, we headed out. First port of call was the airport where we picked up our wayward bags and then out to a small lake at Teichalm for a short wander around and a look at the big bull. This area is called Almenland and is famous for it’s beef due to the grasses and herbs that the cattle feed on which are big, beefy and beautiful. (Jac loves cows!) They don’t have big herds and appear to have very few fences so the cattle tend to graze freely and appear very contented (and why wouldn’t they be!) We ... read more
