Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999.

The day I had been waiting for since I was about five years old and watched the video of The Sound of Music that my dad had bought my mam for Christmas...I was off to Salzburg! This was one of those days where I think I was in a state of shock pretty much the whole time-it's impossible to describe what a big deal it was for me to finally be walking the beautiful streets of Salzburg. Even the train journey from Munich was fabulous (well, apart from a drunk man a few seats away who was mumbling and singing to [View Full Entry]

Guten tag! We arrived in Austria on Monday after a busy day of travel. We had breakfast in Paris, France and lunch in Munich, Germany and we ended the day with supper in Salzburg, Austria. The Austrian food we had was very hearty and delicious, and fun to try and pronounce. Schweinsbraten (Pork and dumplings) for SJ and a solid weinerschnitzl for Andy (deep fried pork)!! Salzburg is a very small city compared to where we have been and it seems very calm and not busy. Yesterday we explored the city, which included finding the pretzel stand that sold huge doughy [View Full Entry]

Travel Blog Day 13 Salzburg We are in the old city of Salzburg now. Not sure how many of the touristy things we will do here, like the Castles and Churches, because we have seen them throughout our trip and they tend to be similar. Its 1:30 in the pm local here and Kyle and Josh have both been asleep since about 230 last night. I’ve been up since 9 (I don’t sleep), but that just tells you how tired these guys are, we are kinda ready to set up our roots for more than a few days. Getting to our [View Full Entry]

Travel Blog: I have lost count of the Days: Salzburg Back on the train headed south into the Med to see Croatia. Its an awful day of travel… Croatia is becoming a tourist destination because of its beautiful beaches but they need a better way to get around before they will get there. We are taking the train from Salzburg to Zagreb for about 7 hours, and then in Zagreb we will be taking a flight from Zagreb to Dubrovnik where hopefully a shuttle will be waiting to take us to Mlini where we are staying. We started out today at [View Full Entry]

Day 8, the Vienna hotel had internet in the lobby on a little internet kiosk, but not for my laptop, so you will get the last few days. We started in day 8 in Budapest and left our hotel and drove up to an overlook of the city for a last look at Budapest. After that we headed to Vienna. After a fairly uneventfull drive we arrived in Vienna and checked into our hotel. Because of the Euro Cup soccer our hotel was out by the airport away from the city. After we got checked in we drove downtown. Our bus [View Full Entry]

Wednesday 18th June Late breakfast (9am!), clearly doesn’t look like a paragliding day, but then a handful check it out and it is a possibility! Several others of us head up the hill towards Herz-Jesu, a chapel we can see from the valley. A steep climb and muddy (and I’ve forgotten my sticks again)… takes a while, but come out to several great panoramas of the valley. We sit for a while trying to spot the paragliders, but give up and head back down - again, trying not to slip! Back to the campsite for lunch where we find the non-paragliders [View Full Entry]

I've been twice in Austria before this time and, on both occasions, I only went to Piesendorf...don't take me wrong, it's a beautiful place, but Austria is big(ish) and there's more to do than waking up every day surrounded by mountains and beautiful landscapes...isn't it??...so this time I wanted to see a bit more but, with lack of time, we could only spend one day in Salzburg before we headed again to (guess where!!) Piesendorf to meet Martin's (aka Ozzy Osbourne) family and, eventually, Ozzy himself... We had to leave Guildford at 3 am to get to the airport on time...it [View Full Entry]

Tuesday 17th June Excursion day to the Krimml Waterfalls - I’m determined to get to the top this time! I manage it… in 1 hour 10 minutes.. the superfit made it in about 50 minutes. Bought walking poles for this particular day, but left them on the campsite - doh! 16 people made it to the top, others chilled at the half-way restaurant or elsewhere. No time to see side-paths or the base! We took longer than expected to get here, and then wait a bit for a couple who got lost on their way back to the coach. Time for [View Full Entry]

Roho: Photos once again not a happening thing. Sorry, don't blame us, it's the super security-ised hostel computers! We're trying our best, so some may appear...maybe. So we totally forgot to tell you about the truck we saw between Prague and Cesky Krumlov. Rich: Rohani turns around, taps me on the shoulder, and says 'look at this'. To our astonishment, the truck in the traffic queue behind us was black. But wait, there's more. Above the driver's window is a big All Blacks sign with the silver fern! The other Kiwis with us on the back seat were just amazed! So [View Full Entry]

Monday 16th June Catherine’s 21st birthday today, so we surprise her with a little cake before we head off - didn’t want to wait til the evening. Find the coach drop in Salzburg after negotiating the one-way system a bit, then Freddie and John drive off to the coach park, and the rest of us head in across the river, looking out for pretzels en route. Lose half the group at the first ATM, more at the pretzel stand, and several went on ahead to find the Sound of Music locations (I would like to have gone with that group!). Had [View Full Entry]
