Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999.

Trains, trains, trains. Thats about all we did today. We jumped on the train early for 8-9 hours travelling to get to Salzberg. Lucky the countryside is so lovely that it gave us plenty to look at (we passed quickly through Strasbourg, where we are booked to stay for Xmas, and are very happy with our choice, it looks lovely). We saw a bit of snow on the way, mum got very excited. :) We had to change trains in Stuttgart, and had a couple of hours wait, so we lockered our bags and went to have a look at their [View Full Entry]

Greetings all! I am writing on the afternoon following my arrival from the beautiful, though small, Italian city of Salzburg. Now I know you're probably a little confused by this statement and thinking that Salzburg is in Austria nearly on the borders with Deutschland and Frankreich, and you'd be right in assuming so, but, I must tell you, it might as well be Italian. I don't think I've ever seen more Italians in my life, and I spent a week in Italy with Hillary. The entire city was flooded with Italians, and people would talk to us first in Italian and [View Full Entry]

Hello from Austria eveyone. Meg is up stairs still lazing around as we wait for the time to go pick up her sister Beth. This means that I finally get to write another blog. Well our last moments in Italy were memorable. We started off the day waking up at 8AM, which meant we had 45 minutes to finish packing everything and get to the trainstation on the other side of Venice. We made our way zigging and zagging through the streets of Venice feeling like we were on a leg of the Amazing Race. After only getting turned around once, [View Full Entry]

Mapeseses girlfriend Jess is studying dance in Salzburg, so we crashed on her floor and she made brownies! Yum! Salzburg has to be the most picturesque city we've been to so far...and Alice loved the Sound of Music locations. We went to the convent where the opening scene is filmed.."How do you solve a problem like Maria..lalalalala...." The best. [View Full Entry]

Greetings loyal readers! We have arrived back in the West, in Austria to be exact. We travelled three hours from Budapest to Vienna where we spent 3 very enjoyable days. We arrived at our hostel, the famous Wombats Lounge, after walking only one block from the train station (best case scenario for backpackers!). We set out immediately to explore the city, walking along the main shopping street (similar to Robson) to the Old Town. As we walked along, we noticed a poster for Quantum of Solace, the new Bond movie! Moments later we noticed that it was playing at the ENGLISH [View Full Entry]

After leaving Budapest, Hungary I traveled to Salzburg, Austria by train. The train ride was about 7 hours, but didn't seem that long because I met someone on the train and we talked for about half the ride and then we slept for the other half. Anna is the girl I met on the train, she is a student from Hungary who studies in Zurich. She was heading back to her apartment in Zurich after visiting her family in Budapest. We talked about our families, our studies, and the differences between European and American life. She was really interested in what [View Full Entry]

Thursday 9th October Austria - Salzberg We drove early to Salzberg and decided to book ourselves into a caravan park and then have breakfast because everyone takes a long time to get up, have breakfast and get put!! So it takes a long time to finally arrive at a new spot. Well, it’s very hard to get out bed when it’s fresh outside and the kids have jumped into our bed, snuggled up between us and the doona is perfectly heated….. Some days the idea of getting up and getting out does not appeal at all. Off we drove into [View Full Entry]

Munich - Salzburg This trip was nicer than all the other train rides because it was short (100min) but very scenic. It’s a lot more of what I imagined Germany and Austria would be. This is entirely to do with the fact that we were finally seeing some country side. Farm after farm of lush green grass (the type you want to roll around in or frolic merrily within). Fields ready for planting and one that have substantial growth already. Many have various small wooden ‘shacks’ I assume for storing farming equipment. Occasionally the ‘natural’ scenery is b [View Full Entry]

Bad Ischl and Hallstatt After a few great days in Salzburg with family we parted ways and under Grandad’s advice headed for Bad Ischl to stay for a couple of days so we could see Hallstatt which is a Heritage listed town lying along a huge lake surrounded snow-capped mountains and just below a famous salt mine. Bad Ischl is the transport hub for the whole lake district which Hallstatt is just one town of. We managed to get a small double room for two nights with breakfast via a short game of charades as the hotel owner couldn’t speak a [View Full Entry]
