Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999.

Salzberg After dropping our bags off at the hostel, we had a quick lunch at My Indigo. We planned to walk around a bit after, but we were feeling pretty cold and tired and decided to stop for coffee first. We went to a little cafe and had the cutest coffees! Mine had a Jewish star in cocoa powder on the foam and Katie's had a star. We shared some Sacher Torte and it was DELICIOUS! After that, we walked for several hours all over. Salzberg is a really pretty city. We went to the Mirabel gardens (part of which was [View Full Entry]

Today was my last day visiting Europe for this trip. I will head straight to the Munich airport tomorrow morning. So, with that being said, I made the absolute most of today. My first great, super, amazing, wonderful, awesome trip was to take a bus to the Unterberg Mountain. There is a cable car that runs to the top of the mountain and what a trip it was. It had snowed up on the mountains, so there was a good amount of snow on top, enough that paths had to be shoveled. It made for climbing up and around a challenge, [View Full Entry]

From the Loading Station

Had a 7:20 taxi waiting to take me to the train station, so did the hustle to get packed and down there. Was easy enough to buy a ticket through a vending machine and hop the train, which took about 2,1/2 hours. Yet another taxi, another hotel. This is a modern one, so has a lot more space and an actual counter in the bathroom for my razor and stuff. My Sound of Music Tour was at 2, so I did some postcards, found a post office and paid a ton for stamps. Wow. Had lunch at a place near the [View Full Entry]

I guess I’m not really a big Sound of Music fan because I never realised that’s where they filmed the sound of music all those years ago until after I actually arrived in Salzburg. In hindsight it all makes sense now…. its near the border of Austria and Germany… it has some spectacular scenery and if you go exploring out of town up in the hills like we did.. it does kinda make you want to sing a little… ( a bit of doe a deer a female deer, never really hurt anyone did it? Haha). That and everyone kept sending [View Full Entry]

Ah...lunch

This morning I embarked on my final tour in Salzburg - the salt mine tour. Salzburg rose in size and stature to a city-state hundreds of years ago when salt was discovered deep below the earth’s surface. Salzburg and its main river were even named based upon the salt extraction and trade. The salt deposits were the result of a salt lake having evaporated and then covered by land over thousands of years. The salt mine tour took us through the extraction process. The trip down was with a host of people going on the Eagle’s Nest tour I did the [View Full Entry]

The next stop was Salzburg. Unfortunately, we didn't plan our time very well, or maybe we were enjoying Vienna a bit longer than we should have, but we arrived in Salzburg at 9pm and only had time to visit the old town, the place where Mozart was born. Also, we had a nice dinner in a really old restaurant St. Peter Stiftskeller, one of the oldest in Europe (some say the oldest - opened in 803 a.d.), mostly because I wanted to try the famous Salzburg nockerl. Amazing desert, so huge that we couldn't finish half of it. But it was [View Full Entry]

Today I took my Sound of Music tour. I arrived early and took the time before the tour started to walk around Mirabell Gardens. I had been there before but the area is so beautiful and the flower arrangements were constantly changing that it deserved another look. The beginning of the tour had to be a bit disappointing for anyone who hadn’t done a walking tour of the city. It was in a small van with the driver merely pointing out some of the city sights from the movie as we drove around. I had already seen most of these on [View Full Entry]

Breakfast was just like yesterday - eggs, meats and cheeses. Gotta love it. I’m getting some protein in my system before I have to get back to the all bread diet that Continental Europeans tend to favor. I took another tour this morning, this time outside of Salzburg. I headed out with a group that was going on a salt mine tour while I was going to visit Obersalzberg and the Eagle’s Nest. Obersalzberg is a mountainside area just above Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian region of Germany. The area became the symbolic home of the Nazi party when Hitler and several [View Full Entry]

I awoke early this morning to take care of my every other week task - a long run. This would be 20 miles so I was pretty happy that there was quite a breakfast spread at the hostel to fuel me up. For the first time in well over a month I had eggs for breakfast. And there were meats and cheeses. Not just baguettes and other breads. Sweet. I thought I’d take advantage of the distance I’d have to cover and travel along the river to take in much of what I wouldn’t see on the tours. The weather was [View Full Entry]
