Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999.

Today was our last real day for sightseeing... tomorrow we would head toward Munich and spend the evening packing and getting everything ready to go. But today, we had one last stop to make... Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart. On our way from the car, we passed through the gardens at Mirabell Palace with their colorful, winding flower beds. The garden was used in the filming of the movie "The Sound of Music", and is where the family sang the song "Do-Re-Me". Geesh, I’m slacking! I have been back in Perpignan for four days and I am only now getting my travelblog updated. I guess I have had more important things to do…like putting my pictures on Facebook…haha. Yep, so Monday Libby and I returned from our second vacation. We visited Salzburg in Austria and Fussen and Munich in Germany. The other three girls went to Scotland and Ireland, where there are more Aquinas students. Salzburg and The Swiss Family Robinson

The train ride to Salzburg from Vienna took about 2.4 hours and the countryside reminded us of the California foothills. Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart and "The Sound of Music." I teased Kim for a few times that we were visiting the home of the Swiss Family Robinson from the Sound of Music. She corrected me pointing out that it was the Von Trapp family in the Sound of Music. Sorry for the slight delay, we've been having too much fun! Yes, this edition of GiantSteve's Excellent Adventure features castles. I have to admit that I knew that the next stop on this trip would be a special one. Girls in our SWEET suits!

Hallo!! So, this past weekend I was in Salzburg. I went with Amanda, Susan, Lucy, Katie and Karla. We left on Thursday by train and the entire trip there took about 6 hours. It was by far the prettiest train ride so far...and i practically live on a train! We got to Salzburg about 7pm and walked to our hostel. It is called YoHo and it is one of the best hostels in Europe. All the signs were in English, there was a bar in the lobby, they made us breakfast every morning, and the people were great! After Herbie and I dropped Joelle off, we got tickets to Salzburg and got on a train. We got there and needed to find a hostel so we found an internet cafe and booked the only one that was listed on hostelworld.com which was a little strange.
