Background: Once the center of power for the large Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was reduced to a small republic after its defeat in World War I. Following annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945, Austria's status remained unclear for a decade. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany. A constitutional law that same year declared the country's "perpetual neutrality" as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. Following the Soviet Union's collapse in 1991 and Austria's entry into the European Union in 1995, some Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999.

May 21, 2008 Wow, we had another busy day. We both got to sleep quickly but my cell phone rang at 3:47am and woke us. I was unable to get the call before it dropped. The call was from area code 413. We did recognize so I did not try to call back. For your info, I will disconnect my phone as I go to sleep every night. If you need us to call when we get up, send me a text message which I will get when I reconnect and then reach you. We decided to take a tour of [View Full Entry]

Beautiful Schonnbrunn, Vienna
What a stunning place this is! Beautiful gardens, well it's more like a park actually...I spent a lot of time walking around, just wonderful.
Well, I am sitting in this internet cafe as it is raining today (Sunday)...how dare it! I still have my little sunshine travelling with me in my case, so what's up?!! Left Vienna and found my intercity train easy peasy! My eurorail vouchers are for 1st class travel ...such style (grin). Just over a 2hr journey ..very smooth. Arrived Salzburg and my bus was waiting for me (just kidding, but there was one going just my way). Quite a way out of the centre of Salzburg, but it is stunning scenery where I am staying. Not sure about the photos as [View Full Entry]

Morning: We woke up early to take a train to Salzburg and find a hostel for one night. So we packed up and said our goodbyes to Daniel who's been nice to let us stay an extra night in his room, and left for the train station. We have to take a tram and change to the Metro to reach the train station and we reach there in time. When we finally reached Salzburg, it was about noon time so we quickly find the way to the youth hostel which we found online and walked all the way there. It took [View Full Entry]

Sorry for the blog delay, internet has not come easily lately. We took a train from Graz to Salzburg on the 7th of May, to get to Jess' Dance Audition at S.E.A.D (Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance). Salzburg was surrounded by mountains and the relatively small town is boxed in by them, some still with snow on them. The 1st day was an open day of classes with current and potential students which Jess loved. The 2nd day we did as much sight seeing as possible including a fortress on top of a hill looking over Salzburg, took a tour down [View Full Entry]

This morning we woke to get an early start on the day (and I wanted eggs for breakfast today - I missed out on them yesterday). My foot felt the same as yesterday, which wasn't encouraging. The plan was for me to stay in our room until checkout at 11:30am, and then catch the bus into the city to meet Karina, then we'd come back at 4pm to collect our bags and catch the train to Vienna. However, after speaking to the owner on the way out, Karina returned to tell me that I could stay in the room until 4pm [View Full Entry]

Hotel Room in Salzburg
Hotel Room in Salzburg
This is our room, with a generous bathroom off to the left. We stayed in a small hotel - Hotel Liilienhof about 10-15mins by bus from the city centre. Highly recommended!
Last night we arrived in Salzburg after 10pm and caught a taxi straight to our hotel. We picked the key up from the hotel restaurant and went straight up to our room - wow! The room is huge - larger than our apartment in Paris and more roomy than our NY apartment! We crashed immediately. We woke this morning to spectacular weather and a snow-capped alpine vista out our window. The only problem was the fact that I had great difficulty walking to the bathroom some 10 feet from the bed. Not a good sign. I hobbled downstairs to breakfast and [View Full Entry]

Well, while in Munich, a day trip to Salzburg was a necessary venture due to the fact that CMurda's a huge Sound of Music fan. It's funny though because the locals in Salzburg could give a rat's ass about the Sound of Music as most of them have never seen it! Salzburg is not very big (150,000) and it's totally doable in a day. It is however a cool town to stroll through and has amazing scenery- the alps in the background, etc. and oh yeah- i guess Mozart's from there if you're into that sort of thing. There's a square [View Full Entry]

Awesome city! It's small,... maybe a bit bigger than Regina. Love the pedestrian-friendliness of it, too. Here's some photos from the last couple days. Picture worth 1000 words and all (plus it really slows me down tyüping on this silly German keyboard. [View Full Entry]
