Since we had purchased our card, today was a day to visit every museum we could pack into the day (however some of them are lazy and dont open on Mondays, so we couldnt go to them all). We started off bz taking a funicular (cable car sort of thingee) up to the fortress on top of the hill. The view from the top was a-ma-zing, we ended up taking about a million and five photos (which i am sure we will bore you all with when we get back). We had another beautifully sunny day, so we could see for miles (its been far warmer here than either France or England). The interior of some of the fortress has been turned into a museum, and we did a little bit of a tour of some of the rooms, however for 'safety reasons' you have to do the first part of the tour in a group, so that was a little tedious being led around, and some of the audio guide was a little long-winded, but it was still worth it for the views. We also had a wander through the old State rooms, which were decorated with some amazing carvings,
and these cool ceramic stoves that we have seen everywhere over here that they used to use for keeping warm and have some fabulous decorations.
We then splashed out and had lunch in the cafe in the fortress, and i had my first austrian schnitzel (with the most awesome potatoes i have ever had, i think they must boil them in butter, im going to find out how they do them).
The afternoon was devoted to Mozart, with visits to his birthhouse, and then the house he lived in after that. These were a little arty, but interesting nonetheless (its quite funny that he is such a big deal here, cos he hated the place). We also paid a visit to the Dom (cathedral) and the museum they have upstairs of some of their art and treasures (and i do mean treasures, one of the crosses had over 1000 diamonds on it, let alone all the other precious stones).
However the highlight of the day was stumbling across a concert band playing in the oldest church in town, St Peters (benedictine), who had come all the way from St Peters Lutheran College in Brisbane on a european tour. The church
was just beautiful, and the concert band was really good, and sounded even better in the awesome acoustics of the church.
To round the evening off nicely, we took a huge elevator ride up to the modern art museum (undoubtedly the ugliest building in town) where they have the most amazing views out over the town, and took a million and five more night-time photos to bore you all with. :)
