Trains, trains, trains. Thats about all we did today. We jumped on the train early for 8-9 hours travelling to get to Salzberg. Lucky the countryside is so lovely that it gave us plenty to look at (we passed quickly through Strasbourg, where we are booked to stay for Xmas, and are very happy with our choice, it looks lovely). We saw a bit of snow on the way, mum got very excited. :)
We had to change trains in Stuttgart, and had a couple of hours wait, so we lockered our bags and went to have a look at their Christmas market. I have never seen so many people before in my life, i think it was even worse than Paris. Being a Saturday afternoon, i think the entire city (and their dogs) was there.
We headed back to the train station with what we thought was a little time to spare between one train and the next, to find out that the silly %$& in Paris that had booked our tickets had not only booked us in the wrong class (we are first class all the way, thank you very much), but that she had also put the wrong time on the ticket and we had ages to go before the train was to leave!! However we didnt feel like the half hour battle to get back through the (drunken, mulled wine is a big favourite over here) crowds to the Christmas market, so we just did some people watching at the train station until it was time to get back on our train. We were amused again by more drunks, who had broken into the conducters booth and were saying all sorts of things over the loud speaker. We couldnt understand a word of it, of course, but they thought they were hilarious.
Then another 4 hours of travelling, mostly in the dark so i cant comment on the scenery, to finally arrive at our destination a little after 10pm. A short taxi ride later and we were at our hotel, which was nice, although not anywhere near the luxury we had become acccustomed to at our last resort. :) And my one word of advice if travelling to Austria; bring your own pillows!!!
