The next morning saw us get up at 3.30am and jump on a 7 hour bus ride in a private van. Good because it was only us, bad because 12 people stuffed into a minivan at crazy o´clock with hardly any legroom and no headrests to lay our weary heads. It made for some interesting sleeping positions! I was lucky enough to sleep most of the way. Our morning was punctuated with a breakfast stop, at which I saw an English girl from another bus who had also been at my hostel in Flores. The traveller trail continues! Honduras is pretty crazy like Guatemala, with very bad roads and very skinny animals. In fact, central America has been having extreme weather and there have been many landslides. At one point the road was so muddy and ... read more

21st Oct ’11 Flores, Guatemala We spent the morning visiting the local market in the town, watching the ladies making tacos and barbequing meat. We set off at 1pm in minibuses up to the border. There were lots of moneychanger men wandering around with great big wads of notes so we managed to get rid of the last of our belizian currency and got some Guatemalan quetzals. The customs process didn’t take too long and we were soon off again. You could really see evidence of the torrential rain they had been having in Guatemala, there was lots of standing water in the fields and the rivers were really high. Despite this being an extremely poor country we stopped on the way to Flores at a purpose built shopping arcade, complete with ice cream parlours! This ... read more

A down side to staying by a remote volcano crater is that food options weren't exciting or plentiful (if you dont want to eat chicken, you're pretty limited). The names of the chocolate bars for sale however were, and having sampled every single one of them we can safely say that american chocolate is crap. Staying loyal to the central america ´proper stuff´ in future. Emily took the opportunity to do some geology and rubbish collection, scuba-style. No paperwork, no forms, no photos. There is no evidence this ever happened. Next ... read more

We have been given details of a place called ‘Paradise Cove’. Apparently, from there you can snorkel out to a remote island which we thought would be something nice to see. There is apparently much wild life in the sea around this area. We managed to negotiate the 20 mile route from our apartment to Paradise Cove without getting lost too many times. Our route took us over many bridges that joined tiny islands together and through many native Bahamas villages. We felt like we had seen the real island here. When we got there, we were disappointed to find that this was another of their attractions that does not really do much out of season. We drove back to the International Bazaar to see if it was any more alive today than it was when ... read more
