When Bob Marley moved onto Hope Road in Kingston back in the 70s, it was a big deal. This was the rich, fancy neighborhood, the place for the politicians and business owners, inheritors of plantation-power and colonial power. They didn't like this little Rasta boy from the ghettos moving in. And it wasn't just him, he brought all his people along with him. From the stories I've read and photos I've seen of Bob Marley's house in the 70s, it was a gathering place for Rasta people and many others, including the working-class Jamaicans who weren't normally welcomed in that neighborhood. Musicians went there to rehearse and record. Poor folks went there to get a little assistance from Bob. Gangsters went there to work out peace treaties. The hip & cool set from abroad went there ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Jamaica » Ocho Rios February 24th 2023

This trip to Jamaica was Chelly's long-time dream for her 40th birthday and she got like 5 birthday parties in a row! :) The first party was Thursday night in Miami (technically her birthday after midnight), when we went wandering around Wynwood, checking out music spots, dancing, eating tacos, looking at graffiti, and all that. I wrote about it in a previous blog. The second party was on Friday night (still her birthday), when we went out dancing in Ocho Rios. But, we're not there yet. Getting to Ochi This was absolutely the hardest day of the trip. We were wrecked from the thing, and all the other things (the first flight getting canceled, airport hassles, then the layover in Miami, getting very little sleep in hotels 2 nights in a row). We'd been through a ... read more

Expectations were high, but Turks and Caicos was as advertised - the water, sand and temperatures were all perfect. All that and its proximity to the U.S. means it’s not exactly a budget island, but luckily it wasn’t that kind of trip. At the same time, it’s the main thing anyone who doesn’t have unlimited money should keep in mind when planning a visit. Products that locals use (milk, apples, bananas, etc.) are only about double what they cost in the U.S., but tourist needs are exorbitant. Examples: $13 for a cylinder of Quaker Oats, $21 for a 6-pack of Kind bars, $3 for an orange, all not including the 12% tax. The theme here is to bring whatever you’re allowed by customs, like cereal, coffee, and snacks. As for restaurants, the going price for a ... read more

After nearly four hours on a bus, we tried to get a taxi to our hotel. The drivers were asking about four times what it was going to cost on Uber so that's what we did. Our driver was quite chatty once he found out that we spoke Spanish. He bemoaned the lack of investment in the city and called it feo - ugly. We thought tatty would have been a better adjective. For the final four nights of our trip we had chosen to stay somewhere a bit more comfortable - url=https://www.booking.com/hotel/cr/radisson-europa.en-gb.html?aid=1769628&sid=ab9aa21dab04cda1b948410f9013a650&all_sr_blocks=35060709_240313887_2_41_0;checkin=2023-03-16;checkout=2023-03-17;dest_id=350607;dest_type=hotel;dist=0;group_adults=2;group_children=0;hapos=1;highlighted_blocks=35060709_240313887_2_41_0;hpos=1;matching_block_id=35060709_240313887_2_41_0;no_rooms=1;req_adults=2;req_children=0;room1=A%2CA;sb_price_type=to... read more

Tuesday 7 February Another good night's sleep. Nothing planned for today, so we had a slow start. Ambled off to Orquidea for breakfast. My current favourite breakfast is cheese & onion omelette, from the egg station prepared at your request. Followed by one pancake covered in syrup. After breakfast we went through the reception area. The second week of our cruise would have started today. The ship is back in operation and some people are transferring to the ship. This is not an option for us due to us cancelling the whole thing and taking a different holiday. A guy in the bar last night, who had done the same as us, said they had spoken to TUI to try and get back on the cruise, but TUI said No. Then off to the beach to ... read more

It's been 7 weeks already? The first week was so new and time crept along. As we acclimated ourselves to the area, created new routines, time sped up and it's already time to return to the US. How did we end up in Guatemala for Spanish Immersion classes? While I was camping in Massachusetts, I met a lovely couple from Eastern Canada. They were planning a trip to Antigua for Spanish Immersion School. I was filled with questions for them. Once they fed my curiosity, I called Don who was midway of his biking trip and asked if he was interested. I received a HUGE yes! Within a couple days the tickets were bought and we were enrolled for school. I hope that sharing our travel experience will entice someone else to jump out there and ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Puntarenas » Quepos February 11th 2023

Quepos turned out to be just the backpacker haven that we expected. That's not a bad thing. There were plenty of hotels and hostels, but we stayed in an apartment (url=https://www.booking.com/hotel/cr/los-suenos-r-amp-g-2.en-gb.html?aid=1769628&sid=8475c9062bf11a9e0347838ce340ee2b&checkin=2023-03-22;checkout=2023-03-23;dest_id=9408887;dest_type=hotel;dist=0;group_adults=2;group_children=0;hapos=1;hpos=1;no_rooms=1;req_adults=2;req_children=0;room1=A%2CA;sb_price_type=total;soh=1;sr_order=popularity;srepoch=1677077645;srpvid=fe4368c589ef01a7;type=total;ucfs=1&#no_availability_msgLos Sueños - The Dreams) just out of the town centre. That should have meant peace and quiet but local dogs, birds and early morning traffic put paid to that idea! Still, it was nice to have our own facilities again and breakfast on the terrace was lovely every day. It was nice to have such a... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Puntarenas » Jaco February 8th 2023

Jaco was not what we expected at all. For some reason we had anticipated something akin to Benidorm in Spain. Instead we found it much more closely aligned to Patong in Phuket, Thailand, but with vastly inflated prices! We didn't really like the place, to be honest, but we made the most of a bad job as we always do. From our luxury accommodation in Montezuma we were in a true backpackers' hostel and my feedback and criticism of their attitude (the guy on reception when we had a problem didn't speak English and got very grumpy when he found out we could do it all in Spanish!) and lack of hot water (despite the electrical contraption being in the room it is, apparently, not included in the price!) did not go down well. Enough of ... read more

Thursday 2 February We spent a quiet day around the resort. Breakfast in the Orquidea. We strolled along the beach late morning and sat for a while having a drink. On our return we then lunched in the beach restaurant. In the evening we had a reservation in one of the speciality restaurants at 6.30 pm. The Dolce Vita and from the name you might guess, Italian themed. An enjoyable meal. Friday 3 February This was our booked tour for Kingston and meeting in the lobby at 7.45 am. We didn't make any effort for breakfast, so just had coffee in the room. A small coach arrived and with one stop at a Rui hotel along the way, there were 14 of us. We headed through the island on the new toll road built by the ... read more

How right we were! Despite being a very steep 20 minute walk into the town of Montezuma (and a short but $8 taxi ride back) we felt it was worth the extra expense. We were soon settling in to the Orange House where we were greeted by two very cheeky white-throated magpie jays who just wanted the cor... read more
