don pedroalright, so i was invited to a mayan ceremony to celebrate wayeb', the end of the year, according to the mayan solar calender. this is the spiritual leader, shaman, healer that held the ceremony

miradorafter the first cermony, don pedro invited some of us to join him and another shaman, jose, for the Ļnew years eveĻ ceremony on top of a volcano. he is 63 yrs. old. i canīt believe he made it. this

sunrisethe lake at about 6:30 am, on our way up.
hiking....it should have taken us about 3 hrs., but it took five instead, he is quite old...and we all needed the rest anyways. we hiked through coffee fields and corn fields too.
the fire ringthe ceremonies are held around a fire, being the gateway to communication with God. offerings are made, such as sugar, rum, incense, chocolate, in order to give thanks. this drawing is the symbol fo

offeringsthese are small discs made up of different herbs and something like coal, one is thrown in for each of the days of the month, everytime a certain prayer or thanks is concluded. we all participate.

shaman and tiger.he carried this with him and hung it up for the ceremony, i am not sure why, and then hw wanted a photo with it.
againthey are both so nice and funny, seriously funny. jose hiked up with a radio blasting the whole time. he sets bones for a living, other than being a spiritual leader.

paradeand after this very surreal day, we hiked down into town to find that they were having some sort of parade, all children dressed up in costume and throwing candy and dancing. quite a day.

full moonit was nearly a full moon, tried to take some pictures of it over the lake, but instead i became obsessed with drawing things using the moon as a pencil and holding the shutter open
