23.02.2010 We checked in at Sopers Hole Tortola, and Bruce and I went ashore to have breakfast, in the Pusser’s Rum village. I think I have described this before, it is a deep inlet with a marina and boardwalk built along one side, and big wide decks with restaurants and shops. The sides of the valley are very steep and wooded. We normally tie onto a buoy in the middle of the inlet. It was a lovely warm sunny day, and when we got back to the boat we carried on up to Peter Island. The snorkelling was good there, and over the next couple of days we did both sides of the bay, seeing loads of bait fish, barracuda and reef fish. We went over to the baths at Virgin Gorda to snorkel. This is ... read more

St Martins Sailing into Phillipsburg from ST Barts is a very easy approach, we were soon settled and anchored in the big wide bay. Ashore was a beach surrounded by bars, with loads of tables and chairs. We had come to Phillipsburg to pick up our friends from Weymouth, who were on a cruise on the Oriana. During the night our boat rolled around in the southeasterly swell, most uncomfortable, it reminds me of being on the toning tables in the gym, sliding up a and down the bed! In the morning I watched Oriana coming in, it seemed so huge in the bay. We picked up Chris and Hilary on the fuel jetty, it was good to see them. Well we did go out for a brief sail, but the wind was blowing about 30 ... read more

Well, it looks like we have been stuck in St. Martin for about a month now. Although that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We love St. Martin! It is a fun and lively island, with great shopping and beautiful beaches, friendly people and great food. Plus the anchorage here inside the lagoon is one of the best in the Caribbean, protected from all weather. It is so convenient to get everything you need by dinghy and an easy place to live on your boat. Last but not least, this is the best place in the world to go to get your boat fixed, not only because there are so many boat chandleries here that are so well stocked and have everything you might need (or are happy to have it flown in next day air without ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Sint Maarten November 21st 2009

What a week! After spending a glorious month in the Grenadines we ran into some problems with the boat. First our rigging needs to be re-done, but we found a temporary solution for that. And our auto-pilot still doesn't work even after sending it back to the States for repairs this hurricane season- frustrating! But the straw that broke the camel's back was that our generator went out last Saturday. And we need the generator to make water and electricity, two vital aspects of living out here. Unfortunately the problem with the generator was more than Jay could fix, even though he has become quite the grease monkey with diesel engines. It has something to do with the brushes and the current sensor, maybe even the circuit board. We checked all of our manuals, did some ... read more

And I am on that 737, landing over the world famous Maho Beach. I had been planning this little getaway for a few weeks and then I read the news today, oh boy! Tropical Storm Ana was heading towards the island. Well, Ana fizzled out. But then came hurricane Bill. I decided to postpone the trip until the following week. I kept a watch on the weather and saw that Bill was projected to turn north about 300-400 miles from the island and totally miss. Great news! The trip planning was back on. The flights were wide open in each direction since it is low season so I booked a hotel on Wednesday evening and departed Indianapolis on Thursday morning. I flew a Delta Connection Embraer 175 from Indianapolis to Atlanta and got first class. The ... read more

We left Barbuda at first light and had a beautiful trip to St. Martin. The wind and seas were calm and the fishing was amazing!!! We caught 3 yellowfin tuna along the way- which is awesome! It definitely was the best fishing day all year. Unfortunately we haven’t caught much fish in the Caribbean. Most of the time it is too windy and thus we are too busy sailing to throw out a line. But even when we have been trolling we have hardly caught anything, not even a nibble. So to land 3 tuna in one day was a record and it made the crew on the Rum Runner very happy. We probably could have kept fishing, but after 3 we decided to take in the lines and focus on getting to St. Martin in ... read more

I’ve been wanting to get out on a tour and Jody and I decided to do one together in St. Maarten today. His only request was that it was something to do with water. As luck had it, today a crew tour was happening so we managed to get on that. It was the America’s Cup Regatta, one I’ve done before and loved. Today was no exception. So much fun! For the America’s Cup Regatta excursion, you get the chance to race on actual regatta racing yachts. Down on the pier, we were split into two teams: one that would be racing on Stars and Stripes, and us who would be on True North (the Canadian ship). We rode another boat out to our sail boats then boarded them. Heckling the other team is completely encouraged ... read more
