My last days in the country I spent in the area of San Juan meeting up with friends, shopping, going to the movies, and just hanging out.
I had a day outing to Las Cuevas de Camuy wich are caves and potholes. The photos are spectacular but after Brian and I made our way there the main caves were closed, so we basically saw a film, and went into one little pot holes clapping until our hands were sore in the hope that some bats would appear. And when you imagine that was the highlight of that tour, n\I think it is needless to explain any further.
During the weekend Doel and I went to Old San Juan to take some photos, and to eat. He took me to this great little park that was slightly hidden away. We spent most nof out ime here taking pictures of the tiny frog, and flowers. It was fabulous seeing it by night as well, and especially the light at sunset sets a special atmosphere in the cobbled streets between these old buildings.
The rest of the week was spent dining with Amy, moving into Amy’s house again. Amy already had
a couch surfer there called Majorlein. A girl from Holland that was super friendly and outgoing. We hung out by the pool together as well as going to La Plazita together for the weekly music festival there. Unfortunately it was techno this time, which did not appeal to us, but we did find a rock concert in the end by a local band that was great. And we enjoyed the hustle and bustle whilst exchanging experiences in life.
On my last day in this friendly country Majoelein and I got invited along to Amy’s family’s Thanks giving party. It was a wonderful experience and a great memory. The whole family was there, and huge amounts of food and drink. It was a constant flow which meant Majorlein and I never even had to leave our place. Someone was constantly offering us to try somethi8ng new, and we ate to our hearts content, and until out belly’s were so big we thought we would burst. Majorlein and I even went for a walk to try to walk it off after dinner ;) Amy’s family received us with open arms, and we felt very much at home, and very welcome. It
was wonderful to see how they celebrate their holidays, and also to take part in such a family event.
In the evening Doel and I said our goodbyes on the beach sharing a bottle of wine talking about our adventures together. It had all been so wonderful and it was sad to say goodbye to someone so special that I had spent so much time with, and someone I now considered a close friend, but all good things come to an end, and it was time to go our separate ways. I do have to admit though, that a tear rolled down my face as i was swept away by dreamland that night.
The next morning it was time to say goodbye to Majoelein and my wonderful host and friend Amy. They were rushing off to head down west, so we all fruit breakfast together as we said our goodbyes, and wished each other well for the future.
There was still one more friend I had to say goodbye to, and that was Erick. He had offered me a ride to the airport, so I agreed as long as I could buy him lunch first. So for
one last traditional Puerto Rican lunch (or perhaps Dominican) we headed fro the food market in Rio Piedras where we chatted over our rice, beans and meat lunch accompanied by fruit juice. As Erick dropped me off at the airport I felt a sadness to leave all these wonderful people behind, people who I consider friends whom I hope to see again some day either back in Puerto Rico or perhaps I can host them in my home wherever that might be :)
