April 1st, San Juan, 12:54pm
Happy April Fool’s day! Hope I didn’t scare anybody too badly yesterday with my fake blog; I am sure most of you who know me figured it out pretty quickly. Karma has a funny way of working itself out though because last night I had a joke played on me, indirectly.
I went to bed at about 11pm and at 12:30am my phone rang; it was Ed’s number so I thought I am not answering that, I will call him in the morning. Then my phone rang again from the I95 on deck 1, I didn’t know who it was so I thought forget that I am not answering that. About 2 minutes later I hear someone running down the hallway and then a bang on my door, ok this was getting ridiculous. I got up, threw my shorts on and flung the door open, and there is Sarah standing there like she has seen a ghost! She said “are you ok??” I said I was until everybody woke me up. She asked what I had done, and I was a little confused. Well it turned out that Ed had told her that I had an accident and I was in the medical facility and was going to be airlifted out tomorrow, so she had been running around looking for me for 20 minutes!!! DAMN YOU ED!!! So I assured her I was ok and she went back up to the crew bar to kick the SH__ out of Ed and I tried to get back to sleep but I couldn’t so I watched a movie.
When I got up this morning at 8am, the ship was rolling around pretty good, which is usually bad news on Tuesday because it means we will probably be late getting into San Juan. Sure enough when I got to the office Sorin informed us we were going to be up to an hour late (which means an hour and a half) and we will have to cancel the rain forest tour (187 people) because there is not enough time to run it.
So that made for a fun morning. There was some good news though as my sign off date has been confirmed for April 13th and my flight has been booked, I will get the details tomorrow but I think I am flying from Miami through Dallas to Vancouver, so that is not too bad.
I had to make the decision to cancel paintball as well today because of our late arrival and I knew it would be to chaotic trying to get everyone to the end of the pier on time so we will go next week instead. I also got to cancel golf for tomorrow as I only had two people signed up, so I have the day off tomorrow to do with what I want so I may finally get to see St Thomas which is exciting!
So now I am getting ready for dispatch at 2:15pm, I get to be the on the microphone again today which is nice because I am not down in the trenches handing out stickers and explain why the rain forest tour has been cancelled.
6:20pm
Dispatch went relatively smoothly considering we had to change the plan at the last minute when they opened the forward gangway for the tours. We were done by 3pm so I went to change and met Ed and Sarah on the gangway and we headed into town as we all had some stuff to do. We made a couple of stops at marshals, Walgreens, and radio shack and then split up to get a few more things.
We met for lunch at Lupis and ran into Dan, Geenie, Scott, and Tim so we took over one side of the restaurant and ordered lunch. Big lunches with a gang of friends is one of my favorite parts of this job because we sit around and tell stories about our travels and drink beer.
I am getting ready to go to work now, and I am predicting a busy night at the desk because of the cancelled tour this afternoon, although we are staying an extra hour tonight so maybe most people will still be in San Juan until we close.
