After arriving and getting settled in the cheapest hotel there but still very expensive, I got in touch with Simon from Sweden who a common friend of ours told me lived in Mayaguez. Simon is a student there, and is living his life to the full here, enjoying every moment, and partying big time ;) He is just one of these people you can not like, he is so easy to talk to and so easy to have fun with, that you just feel like you have bumped into an old friend
Simon came and picked me up at the Hotel and showed me around town took me to eat, and then we hit the bars…… Simon was so much fun to hang out with, he is so chilled and laid back, and I think he makes everyone around him just feel at ease. We talked and drank, and after quite a few drinks, we decided to go and get showered to get ready to hit the town again…..
Simon picked me up again at 8, after a 2 hour break, with plenty of alcohol to have whilst me finishing to get ready, and as Simon knows girls
quite well, he knew I would not be ready when he turned up, so well prepared he came! We finished off the drinks and headed for town. There were not many people about yet, but I was told that as Mayaguez is a student town, there would be people about shortly. Right they were, at eleven o’clock the town was buzzing. We headed for the roof top bar, and enjoyed the breeze, the people and plenty more drinks……
I met so many nice people that night, people here are so inquisitive, and friendly, I think I can truly say I have never met friendlier people before. They all talk to you, and all smile at you, and buy you drinks. The night went on until 6-7 in the morning crawling from bar to bar. People here knew how to party and have fun and they seem to spend just as much time in the street as in any of the venues. The music is blaring from every corner, and people are dancing and singing along.
The next morning I was shattered needless to say…. I had not partied that hard since my teens I think, but I did
have a great night. Simon the party animal did not stop however after one night, so he dragged me out the next night too, and all of this partying was apparently just to warm up for Halloween….. When he arrived at the hotel I was fast asleep, and quite enjoying the rest, he refused to take no for an answer though, so out of bed I leapt, and into my dress and off we went.
I headed out a second night on the trot, feeling slightly tired, but after a few drinks I felt good as new;) Again there were more people to meet, and as Simon seems to know everyone there was plenty of kissing and hand shaking going around. We drank, and chatted, and I watched Simon prepare for Halloween in his priest costume getting people to give him their confessions……. A stranger priest would be hard to find, but he is definitely the most fun priest I have ever come into contact with.
Surprisingly enough the night was no shorter than the previous one, so Simon’s last confession was on our way home at 7 in the morning…… It felt like good old time
growing up in Marbella, I almost missed my adolescence for a moment, but quickly realised I was now 31, and could not carry on like this…. Hahaha
The next day I literally crawled out of bed at 4 in the afternoon, feeling ashamed as I had not yet really seen Mayaguez by daytime. So out into town I went trying to get some photos to prove I had been there. There are many gorgeous buildings in this town, so it was not hard to find motives.
I went to bed early evening, as I had plans to move on to Rincon the next day. So I thought it would be wise to get some rest and to get up early the next day to pack my bags…. And to make sure I was not disturbed, I sent Simon a message that I was not celebrating Halloween with him, but for him to have fun
I did get up early the next morning, still feeling a little tired, but so happy I had not gone out partying again. I checked put of the Hotel and made my way down to the taxi stand. Unfortunately in Puerto Rico
they have little to none public transport, so it is very hard and expensive to get around the country to see all it’s splendour. I got in the only Taxi there was and off to Rincon I went.
Lessons learnt:
1. Never too old for a great party
2. Age is seldom relevant
3. Friends come in all shapes and forms
