Signs of being back in the USA After our passage from the Dominican Republic our first anchorage in Puerto Rico was Boquerón. This is a small resort town located in the southwest corner of the island. It not an official port of entry, therefore we had to get transportation to the customs and immigration office in Mayaguez. In order to do this we found Raul who has a business providing transport for cruisers back and forth for $15 per person. We made the arrangement and got checked in without any problems. It did however cost us $27.50. This was for some customs sticker that was required. Bob was to say the least a little perturbed by the idea that he had to pay to get back into his own country. When was the last time any ... read more

FERRY RIDE TO CULEBRA With one car, we have to make two trips every place. (*Note: Get two cars next time because you can’t be without a car on Puerto Rico. Little is within walking distance.) The first group left at 7:30 p.m., and Clint was back for us by 7:50 a.m. We ran into some traffic on the way there, and it took 15 minutes to arrive at the port. We met the rest of the group at the bakery a block from where the ferry docks. Jenny had bought us all muffins for breakfast. We were about out of food at the villa and didn’t have time to make a fourth grocery store stop. She had purchased our ferry tickets the night before for the 9 a.m. ferry to Culebra. We waited inside for ... read more

Isla Culebra (IPA: ) (Snake Island) is an island-municipality of Puerto Rico originally called Isla Pasaje and Isla de San Ildefonso. It is located approximately 17 miles east of the Puerto Rican mainland, 12 miles west of St. Thomas and 9 miles north of Vieques. Culebra is spread over 5 wards and Culebra (Dewey) Pueblo (The downtown area and the administrative center of the city). The island is also known as Isla Chiquita (Little Island) and Ultima Virgen (Last Virgin). Residents of the island are known as Culebrenses. These small islands are all classified as nature reserves and several nature reserves also exist on the main island. One of the oldest bird sanctuaries in United States territory was established in Culebra on February 27, 1909 by President Teddy Roosevelt. There are bird sanctuaries on many of ... read more

CULEBRA ISLAND, PR Culebra Island is a small island at the east of Puerto Rico. Is 20 miles east from Fajardo and 15 miles west of St Thomas. Is a 7 miles long and 4 miles wide island and for me is the ultimate Caribbean Paradise. There is no fast food places, and just a few complex (locals want to keep it that way). This time I want to share pictures of my recent trip to the island on the weekend of Feb 15, 2008. Enjoy!! ... read more

I hope you had a great Christmas and holiday and are now back at school raring to go for 2008. I travelled to Puerto Rico over Christmas. We visited the island of Culebra, also known as one of the ‘Spanish Virgin Islands’, for a bit of a break and to do some diving. Culebra is a tiny little place with only about 2000 residents. Everyone knows everyone so when we found ourselves without transport on Christmas day to go out for a slap up meal, a friendly taxi driver who was having the night off, agreed to leave his party just to ferry us to the restaurant and back. He then sat down and had a drink with us to celebrate the occasion! After a few days of sun on the beach, we headed up to ... read more

We awaken early Friday morning and once again set off for Fajardo. Only this time we will not be staying. We are boarding a ferry down at the port for a day-trip to Culebra, an island just off the coast. Culebra has a total population of about 1800. According to Frommers, this is a very lazy and relaxed island. It is said to resemble what the Carribean used to be like in the 60’s; before much of it became commercialized. There are no resorts or high-rises on Culebra. If you choose to stay, you can rent a guesthouse near one of the beaches, or stay in the tiny town of Dewey (the only town on the island). Another popular option for visitors wishing to stay on Culebra is camping at Flamenco Beach, which was recently voted ... read more

Since the rest of the vacation has begun to mesh together in my mind, I figured I would summarize it in one post: A few days before I left NY I checked the weather and was dismayed to see a 40% chance of rain each day for the entire trip. I told my mom expecting her to be equally upset, but she laughed at me. She told me that in the tropics there is always a 40% chance of rain but if it does rain it is usually only for a few minutes. True to her word, it didn't rain at all. Just one more reason not to trust the weather channel. We spent most of our time at the beach. I would have liked to have spent all of our time at Playa Flamenco, ... read more
