Once back at Doel lovely abode I got to wash all my clothes and pack my bag for camping at Culebra Island on Flamenco Beach. We headed of mid day on the Monday on an open air boat with the perfect view of the sunset and all the Cayos on the coast of Puerto Rico. Both Doel and I were too busy to take photos that we barely said a word too each other the whole way, but it was never an uncomfortable silence so it was fine. I guess that is how it is between good friends :) We arrived [View Full Entry]

We awaken early Friday morning and once again set off for Fajardo. Only this time we will not be staying. We are boarding a ferry down at the port for a day-trip to Culebra, an island just off the coast. Culebra has a total population of about 1800. According to Frommers, this is a very lazy and relaxed island. It is said to resemble what the Carribean used to be like in the 60’s; before much of it became commercialized. There are no resorts or high-rises on Culebra. If you choose to stay, you can rent a guesthouse near one of [View Full Entry]

Since the rest of the vacation has begun to mesh together in my mind, I figured I would summarize it in one post: A few days before I left NY I checked the weather and was dismayed to see a 40% chance of rain each day for the entire trip. I told my mom expecting her to be equally upset, but she laughed at me. She told me that in the tropics there is always a 40% chance of rain but if it does rain it is usually only for a few minutes. True to her word, it didn't rain [View Full Entry]

Before I begin talking about the trip, I figured I should start with how we decided to go to Culebra. To make a long story short, my Mom and I were supposed to go visit my Grandparents in Florida for Mothers Day, but my Mom and my Grandma got in a fight, and so we decided to go to Culebra instead. Now that thats out of the way.... I was skeptical at first, but I found out that 5:45AM actually does exist. I had never seen it before this day. Not a fan. After a 4 hour flight we arrived [View Full Entry]

Sunday, January 21, 2007 - Playa Flamenco, Culebra - Spanish Virgin Island, Puerto Rico Not many people have heard about the Spanish Virgin Islands, which mostly consists of two archipelago groups of Culebra and Vieques. This is the very spot where the Greater and Lesser Antilles meet. Geographically, these islands should be considered as the U.S. Virgin Islands instead of Puerto Rico; Culebra is only 12 miles west of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands (compared to 17 miles from mainland Puerto Rico). But, that is just a formality. Culebrenses would consider themselves [View Full Entry]
