View from Hotel
The view from our hotel balcony Since the rest of the vacation has begun to mesh together in my mind, I figured I would summarize it in one post:
A few days before I left NY I checked the weather and was dismayed to see a 40% chance of rain each day for the entire trip. I told my mom expecting her to be equally upset, but she laughed at me. She told me that in the tropics there is always a 40% chance of rain but if it does rain it is usually only for a few minutes. True to her word, it didn't rain at all. Just one more reason not to trust the weather channel.
We spent most of our time at the beach. I would have liked to have spent all of our time at Playa Flamenco, but my Mom was on a mission to see each and every beach on the island, none of which are as nice in my opinion as Flamenco. The coolest beach we saw was Playa Carlos Rosario. To get there, you need to park, climb through a hole in a fence, and hike through the woods for 30 minutes. And yes, that is the
Hotel
Our hotel official way in. We went snorkeling there and I was literally swimming through schools of fish. Very cool. It was hard trying not to crush all of the coral, since it is everywhere, but fun nonetheless. We also went to Playa Zoni and a few other beaches whose names I don't remember.
Since Sunday was Mothers Day, we went to the nicest hotel on the beach, the Sandbourne, for a nice dinner. Some nights we cooked and other nights we sampled the local restaurants. One night we went to Dingy Dock, so called because people literally sail their dingies in from the water and hop up to the restaurant. Another night we went to a restaurant whose name translates to "the Hideout of Zorro", which was recommended by Johnny, the hotel manager. On the way there, we came upon a dog hanging out in the middle of the road. I had to get out of the car and chase him away before we could pull into the restaurant. On the way out, the dog was sleeping in the middle of the road. Another example of how different life in Culebra is from life in NYC.
At night we

Pretty Flower watched movies that my Mom rented. Some nights we would hang out on the beach looking up at the stars and listening to the Ocean. Very peaceful. Having lived in or around the city for all of my life, I forget how amazing stars are. Unfortunately, the bugs were out in full force so we retreated into the relative safety of our room after a little while.
Here are some things that I learned on this trip:
Off bug spray does not work...at all. It actually attracts mosquitoes.
Waterproof sunscreen is not waterproof, sweatproof or sunproof.
Playa Flamenco is the nicest beach in the world.
I could get used to the Culebra lifestyle.
I want to someday own a hammock.
Never drive a Geo.
Heading Home:
To save money, we took a ferry and a cab to the airport in San Juan as opposed to the tiny plane. Just over 2 hours vs 30 minutes, but the ferry was very nice, and I was happy not to have to squeeze into the tiny plane again. We arrived at Newark in the evening and caught a cab home. As soon as I

Another Pretty Flower saw the familiar yellow shapes rushing by I knew we were home. Thus ends my trip to Culebra. If you are looking for an exciting trip with people to meet and tons to do then Culebra is not the ideal destination. But, if you are looking for peace, quiet, and relaxation, then there is no place like it.
