Cartagena to Panama is a short 50 minutes flight. Going through Cartagena airport is quite something…smooth and pretty fast, but with a huge amount of drug searching. It must be the first time somebody is actually sniffing the inside of my computer. I arrived at my hotel just before lunch time. My goal for the day was to visit the Miraflores locks at the Panama Canal and then have a walk through the Old City, Casco Viejo. This time I’m staying right in the middle of town, with a huge upgrade…huge bath, huge bed….well needed as the last night I had only two hours sleep. I did get the feeling I wouldn’t see much of the nightlife of Panama…and I was right! The great thing about Panama is that taxis are dirt cheap. They don’t have ... read more

We arrived to the panama shoreline and Gisbert gave us a lift to the town centre where we could get a bus into Panama city. There was a street parade going on and part of the road which the bus would go down was shut off, so we hiked a few Kms up road and hailed a bus which was heading in the right direction. It was a little under a £1! We checked into the hostel and headed to the panama canal. I turned into a geek for the next couple of hours as it was really quite facinating to see what a precicion operation the ships passing through undergo. there is only a 35 inch gap on either side so not much room to manouver at all!! Kate and i got some dinner and ... read more

"I am driving to the airport with my dad and brother. It might be a long drive.....We are in the bus to get to the airport. We have to take the bus because we cant park next to the airport....We are now in the airport. We have to check in and get a boarding pass....We are in the airplane now and it is very late. We are in the hostel waiting to get breakfast.....We saw the canal moving the water. It moved down and up. First the water moved down and then otheer side of the water up and then up and other side went down so the boat can move. We got some ice cream because it was really hot and we had some fish that was really good." Sofia Journal Entry October 24-25 It ... read more

When I last left off, I was waiting for my first flight. Since then, a lot has happened. I caught that flight and sat next to a nice guy who was flying home to florida. Somehow, conversations always seem to end up on politics during election season. This guy was for Obama. When I hopped off of that flight, I was hungry and really hoping for one last big fat diet coke to carry me through the next six months (you see, Panama only has Coca-Cola Light, which doesn't even hold a candle to good 'ol USA Diet Coke). Unfortunately, the Fort Lauderdale airport only has Pepsi products, so I choked down a turkey sandwhich and a diet pepsi with a coffee lid on it of $11. I waited for an hour and a half, reconnected ... read more

A day at sea and for the whole day we hugged the coastline of Panama inching our way closer to our next destination, Panama City and the gateway to the highlight of this trip, transiting the Panama Canal. We didn't lose sight of land until the sun went down and even then somehow you knew the land was still out there! Each stateroom receives a daily paper known as the Princess Patter. This provides the reader with all the activities to be found on board. Apart from trivia you can go to line dancing, zumba or ballroom dance lessons. There are lectures on a wide variety of topics. Roisin and I noticed a few people taking photos of the propeller of one of the lifeboats. They had obviously been to the master class on digital photography! ... read more

Panama After having spent three weeks or so in Costa Rica things began to feel repetitive and we wanted to go somewhere else for a while. If you look at a map you realise there aren't many places to choose if you wish to leave Costa Rica overland. If you then add that Emma has already visited Nicaragua and preferred to go somewhere else we were down to only one option - Panama. We entered Panama at the Sixaola/Guabito border crossing. We were told that this border crossing is the main gateway for visitors to Bocas del Toro archipelago, a popular place to go from Costa Rica. Therefore we were very surprised when the official checking our passports started asking a lot of questions and wanted us to present a valid flight ticket out of Panama. ... read more

Made it to Panama City! My last stop in central America. I'm staying in Casco Viejo, which is the "old town" region across the bay over looking the city's skyline. I was very surprised when I first saw this city. I don't feel like I am in Central America. It feels more like Miami with large skyscrapers, fancy shops, people from all over the world, and super nice houses & cars. Not to mention its hot and humid here. It's a very nice and lively big city where you can go out to clubs any night of the week and still get away with having meals for under $3. I've stayed a total of 5 nights in this city. Probably more than I have in any other city thus far. I'm staying at a place called ... read more

I almost did not. It was looking like i might have ended up in Miami instead. My flight had arrived 20 minutes late and into terminal 24; i was leaving out of terminal 49. Slowed by a weighted back pack and a pair of flip flops i attempted to make a run for my plane which was deaprting in 10 minutes. Not making any headway, i stripped off the flip flops, chucked the bottle of water and ran my heart out. My years of yoga have done nothing for my cardio and I realized 7 minutes in I was completely out of shape. I was the last one to board as the door was closing. Now I was sweaty, dirty and hungry. My trip had started at 1am. We landed Panama city at 11:30 local time ... read more

17 hours to go before take off.. I am finally packed, an Olympic feat worthy of a gold medal. While I am limited to 50 pounds for the first flight, I am further restricted to 20 pounds on the in-country flight on Air-Holy Crap. As some of you know I hate to fly so the in-country flight to my first destination has me a little worried. I had convinced myself it would be okay until I received the ticket; hand written and it included my cost of the fuel based on body weight. If at first glance this aircraft looks like it was pulled out of a museum or built by a 13 year old in his garage, then I will surely opt for the 14 hour bus ride. The buses are old, converted school buses ... read more

After being forced to stay a night longer in Bocas del Toro we decided to make it a good night out. We still planned to get up at 5am the next morning and, together with our Norwegian co-travellers, catch the bus to Panama City. We made it a really great night out at Barco Hondido- a popular open air bar/club in Bocas with a "swimming pool". There we ran into a few people we met while travelling. After the bar closed we bought a few beer and sat down in the main square where some locals gathered to organise a spontanious live-concert, which unfortunatly got cut by the police. By that time it was 3am so we grabbed a quick bite and made a bet with the Norwegians, as we were convinced they wouldnt manage to ... read more
