Background: With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama Canal Zone). The Panama Canal was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. On 7 September 1977, an agreement was signed for the complete transfer of the Canal from the US to Panama by the end of 1999. Certain portions of the Zone and increasing responsibility over the Canal were turned over in the intervening years. With US help, dictator Manuel NORIEGA was deposed in 1989. The entire Panama Canal, the area supporting the Canal, and remaining US military bases were turned over to Panama by or on 31 December 1999.

We were a little hesitant to go back to Panama City after the less than good first impression we had gotten of it. But it was either go to Panama City or sleep on the beach in Bocas in the rain, so we went. We stayed at a hotel that was recommended by some people we'd met in Bocas, who were going to be staying there for our second night. It was pretty nice, and when we asked for a room with a view, we got a room on the 17th floor overlooking the entire bay. Awesome. We got to the [View Full Entry]

We took a trip to Panama over Jason's spring break in March. We started in Panama City, then headed to the mountain town of Boquete, and then spent a couple of days in Bocas del Toro, a chain of islands on the Caribbean side, before heading back to Panama City. On our first night in Panama City we stayed at La Casa de Carmen, a hostel/budget hotel that had gotten great reviews. We met some fun people and hung out for awhile, but had a rough first night's sleep with bus engines and car horns making it hard to stay asleep [View Full Entry]

After planning to see South America 2 years ago, I am finally on the way. Here we are in Panamaīs airport on the way to LIMA, Peru. So we were sitting here waiting for our flight to depart and hear our names in midst of an all-Espanol announcement on the overhead. Unlike Miami where we just left, there are no announcements in English here. I better work a little harder of my Spanish vocab. because that announcement was to inform us that we had been reticketed for another flight since our original flight to Lima was delayed. My Spanish is coming [View Full Entry]

There is a saying in spanish "borrocho de sueno" (there is a squiggly over the n) -drunk with sleep. Well I am suffering from a Panama hangover. I got home last night after a 17 hour journey from Gamboa to Panama, then DFW, LAX and finally San Diego. My cell phone died in the middle of the night and I thought the beeping was monkeys calling. I was confused why the floor was suddenly so comfortable and why was it so cold? Shouldn't I have been sweating and swatting mosquitos? Luckily I did not arrive home sick this time and the [View Full Entry]

We’ve made it to the Pacific Ocean! It took 20 hours and 53 million gallons of fresh water to get us through the Panama Canal. Now we’re floating at the interface between two oceans and two continents. The Marnie is moored at the base of the “Bridge of the Americas,” which connects North and South America, at the southern end of the Canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Panama Canal transit went smoothly. Set out at dusk, passed through first three locks after dark through chambers lit up like Times Square. Spent the night moored on Lake Gatun amon [View Full Entry]

The panama carnival was such a blast... we didnt actually even know the Panama Carnival was on until we turned up in Panama City after venturing through Costa Rica. After hearing the news from the manager Stew of Mamallena's hostel (awsome place to stay if your wanting to party) we quickly made our way out to get some booze for the night, one thing led to another and eventually it was about 5pm and a group of approx 15 of us made our way to the carnival... Literally within about 15 minutes me and Moose lost the group but that i [View Full Entry]

Scientific Fact: Itīs actually mathematically possible to measure your exact distance from the Caribbean sea by counting the number of times you hear Shaggy being played. For this and other reasons Iīm throwing my lot in with the Pacific, if you force me to choose. Thereīs less rain, better surf, and everyone isnīt so stinking grumpy! The Caribbean has perfect white sand, azure blue sea, boiling sunshine, yet everyone walks round with a face like a London Bus driver when youīve asked him for change from a tenner. Maybe itīs over exposure to Shaggy? Anyway, I digress. Weīve le [View Full Entry]

Today is the day that I leave Panama. I'm pretty sad about this, however it is not the last time I will be here. I'll be back!! I laid out by the pool yesterday and swam, it was great. Then Michael and I went and had some drinks at Bogey's bar (the restaurant is called Casablanca...hmm) and met a pilot for Continental express. Very nice guy who had an interview today with Copa airlines. He is originally from Argentina, oh la la!! He is very cute! I will be leaving him my email address...!! I also met a some french and [View Full Entry]

So Erin made me a packed lunch and dropped me off at terminal 4 and we hugged and said our goodbyes and i went into the terminal. In the car i had started to get an icky stomach and i still have it now, so it was not comfortable having to wait an hour in line waiting to check in, it was a tuesday night and you wouldnt imagine it would be busy and it was not busy, its just American airlines happy staff were limited and not the most helpful and they gradually took there time to work through everyone, [View Full Entry]

Iīm walking around today with pink dotted legs. I bought some calamine lotion for all my itchy bug bites. Itīs quite funny. I couldnīt blend in with the crowd if I tried. Also the swelling in my ankles finally went down. I canīt remember if I mentioned it earlier, but up until we came back from Costa Rica, I had cankles!! My ankles were swollen and from what I donīt know but it looked awful. Anyway, swelling finally went down but now I have all these ugly bites all over my legs.
