On the way to South America

After planning to see South America 2 years ago, I am finally on the way. Here we are in Panama´s airport on the way to LIMA, Peru. So we were sitting here waiting for our flight to depart and hear our names in midst of an all-Espanol announcement on the overhead. Unlike Miami where we just left, there are no announcements in English here. I better work a little harder of my Spanish vocab. because that announcement was to inform us that we had been reticketed for another flight since our original flight to Lima was delayed. There is a saying in spanish "borrocho de sueno" (there is a squiggly over the n) -drunk with sleep. Well I am suffering from a Panama hangover. I got home last night after a 17 hour journey from Gamboa to Panama, then DFW, LAX and finally San Diego. My cell phone died in the middle of the night and I thought the beeping was monkeys calling. I was confused why the floor was suddenly so comfortable and why was it so cold? Shouldn't I have been sweating and swatting mosquitos? We’ve made it to the Pacific Ocean! It took 20 hours and 53 million gallons of fresh water to get us through the Panama Canal. Now we’re floating at the interface between two oceans and two continents. The Marnie is moored at the base of the “Bridge of the Americas,” which connects North and South America, at the southern end of the Canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The panama carnival was such a blast... we didnt actually even know the Panama Carnival was on until we turned up in Panama City after venturing through Costa Rica. Scientific Fact: It´s actually mathematically possible to measure your exact distance from the Caribbean sea by counting the number of times you hear Shaggy being played. For this and other reasons I´m throwing my lot in with the Pacific, if you force me to choose. There´s less rain, better surf, and everyone isn´t so stinking grumpy! Today is the day that I leave Panama. I'm pretty sad about this, however it is not the last time I will be here. I'll be back!! I laid out by the pool yesterday and swam, it was great. So Erin made me a packed lunch and dropped me off at terminal 4 and we hugged and said our goodbyes and i went into the terminal. In the car i had started to get an icky stomach and i still have it now, so it was not comfortable having to wait an hour in line waiting to check in, it was a tuesday night and you wouldnt imagine it would be busy and it was not busy, its just American airlines happy staff were limited and not the most helpful and they gradually took there time to work through everyone, [View Full Entry]

I´m walking around today with pink dotted legs. I bought some calamine lotion for all my itchy bug bites. It´s quite funny. I couldn´t blend in with the crowd if I tried. Also the swelling in my ankles finally went down. I can´t remember if I mentioned it earlier, but up until we came back from Costa Rica, I had cankles!! My ankles were swollen and from what I don´t know but it looked awful. Anyway, swelling finally went down but now I have all these ugly bites all over my legs. Crossing the border from Mexico to Guatemala, you can adjust your clocks by as little or as much as you like as you go from General Mexican Time to Guatemalan Mean Time. I was aboard a Mexican tourist shuttle that was to meet up with a similar service on the Guatemalan side. For almost 2 hours we waited at the border, sitting outside the ´immigration office´ in the blaring mid-day sun. Luckily our international crew had all the ingredients to keep us entertained. I'm super bummed out! We went for a walk on the cendaro today and I rolled my ankle. When that happened, my camara flew out of my hands!! I have no idea where it went. I wouldn't be so bummed except I hadn't uploaded my pics from Costa Rica.....SUCKS!!! We tried looking for it but since it is the jungle and on a steep bank, it was next to impossible.
