Background: With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama Canal Zone). The Panama Canal was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. On 7 September 1977, an agreement was signed for the complete transfer of the Canal from the US to Panama by the end of 1999. Certain portions of the Zone and increasing responsibility over the Canal were turned over in the intervening years. With US help, dictator Manuel NORIEGA was deposed in 1989. The entire Panama Canal, the area supporting the Canal, and remaining US military bases were turned over to Panama by or on 31 December 1999.

Left to rot, this hotel would have been incredible. Beach front, with its own private beach, indoor swimming pool, large dance hall up the top, views on 3 sides... wow! Now, its concrete ruins... anyw... [more]
Tim version: * Landed in Panama City and had an adventurous intro to Panama on the bus then taxi. * Checked out the Panama Canal, Casco Viejo, Panama Viejo. The not too heavy, not too light, just right version: Panama City! Land of the... well.. new high rise building, colourful commercial signs, and the most incredible bus service around! Starting at the beginning, I landed at Panama Airport at night which is always a fun more adventurous start when you can't really speak the language, the dodgy characters are out in force, and you don't know where you're going! Thats not [View Full Entry]

Hello once again! I'm here in the capital city of Panamá, staying with my host family, the de la Rivera's. Panamá is a very large city with lots of tall buildings, a fair amount of pollution, lots of friendly people, a rapidly rising crime rate, a canal some of you may have heard of, LOTS of fried food, and very hot, humid weather. That said, I'm enjoying myself quite a bit so far, despite the difficulty of adjusting to life in a big city in a foreign country. We're in class for more than six hours per day whcih has me [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Panama in what is for us an unusual fashion, it was still daytime! Not only that but we arrived in the morning. It was raining which for me was a bit of a relief. Not because I was sick of sun or anything (beacuse that it highly unlikely ever to happen) but beacuse it made me feel less guilty for missing an entire day in Panama due to my spending the rest of the afternoon at an internet cafe preparing and then taking part in an NFL Fastasy Draft. Funnily enough, I had been looking forward to this [View Full Entry]

Hello all.. Allan is here. We are alive and safe. Honestly we have been having so much fun and meeting tons of great people that we have not been near a computer to keep in touch. So I apologize to the parental units in advance for our lack of communication. We are both very happy. So, not to ruin anything but we are in Panama. WOW. i know. We havent updated about Costa Rica at all. I guess one is long over due. We left Ometepe and made haste to the insanely long Costa Rica/Nicaragua border. A taxi drops us off [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, August 19, 2008 We had breakfast and then got paperwork together to walk to Balboa and Calle Uruguay to meet with Panama Casa property management company. It poured on us so had to walk thru mud near the construction sites. There are many projects proposed or going up on Balboa. The office of Panama Casa is in the La Gaviota building. Security person in next building knew this and helped us. Once in the building we learned that Betsy was still with another client and spent a very productive 20 minutes with Suzett who provided us with a typical rental [View Full Entry]

On Saturday, 17 August, we got up early and started our drive to El Valle del Anto for the early market. We found a French bakery on Via Argentina and stopped for coffee and pastries to go. We arrived in El Valle about 9:40 as the market was going but not crowded. Saw very nice crafts and produce and beautiful orchids. After more than an hour we walked to the shops at Hotel Don Jose and looked at CocoBolo hand crafted wood articles. We had juice driinks at the mercado then drove out to see Los Capitanes and walk around the [View Full Entry]

A bit of catch up to do on activities since the 12th. On Wednesday August 13th, we meet Jackeline and traveled to a warehouse for the appliance line called Linea Blanco. There we say various options and the Frigidaire appliances. After looking at various options for a "set-in" cook top (Estufo) we decided against this. But we did decide on a dishwasher and selected the Microwave Oven that includes a ducted vent and light for above the stove cook top. Here we met with Danitza who informed us that we would need a quotation from Lisbeth. Sol sent me her email. [View Full Entry]

Sunday, August 10, 2008 We awake and Harlan sees the only sun for the entire day! By the time we are ready to eat it is pouring outside and we decide to head out toward the Pacific beaches. We find our way across the Bridge of the Americas and proceed onto the Pan American Highway toward David. We are beginning to get hungry but stop at Capira at the junk shop. Sara thinks thinks this is a treasure house. She especially likes a figure of a monkey made from cocobola wood. On down the street a short distance to our favorite [View Full Entry]

Trying to learn how to use this. Seems one must save and not publish to get back to a specific title and add more days. We shall see. {later edit - listing the entries then clicking on the text allows one to edit what has been saved or published.} About 9:45 PM on Thursday, 7 August Lauren Thomas picked us up at home and took us to the airport. Checked our bags and waited for our plane which left at 12:50 AM for Atlanta. Just before boarding we enjoyed a TCBY frozen dish. We arrived at Atlanta early but were in [View Full Entry]

Ended up staying in Panama City for another day since there is so much to do here. Today we went to Panama Viejo which is the ruins of Panama from back in the 1500s. It rained most of the afternoon but we spent a good bit of time exploring the area of the city that we are staying in, Casco Viejo. It is very old world and the buildings are magnificent. We saw Noreyaga's, not spelled right, home before he was forced out by the US. Only a shell of a building due to the bombing but still can tell how [View Full Entry]
