[View Full Entry]

Miraflores Locks
Miraflores Locks
We saw two ships pass through. This is the first one. Very big. Impressive
Hello from Panama City. We arrived late last night with no problems. Today we enjoyed the city starting with the Amador Causeway at the Pacific entrance to the canal. It was absolutely gorgeous. We walked around the city and visited the Miraflores Locks in the afternoon. The huge cargo ships pass between the Atlantic and Pacific in approx. 8 hours with a 2 foot clearance on both sides inside the locks. It is simply genius, it saves the ships two weeks time if they had to pass around Cape Horn. The old architecture is beautiful, but some of it is in [View Full Entry]

Hey folks, this is Roger (aka..Dodge). The skip (Greg) has told me to do my own introduction on the travel blog and update you with some photos. So here is some news... After contacting Greg and firming up my spot on the crew list I packed up my life in London flew to Jamaica for some kitesurfing and cricket and headed to Panama via Cuba for a few days. The canal passage date was brought forward and with Tim and Tom had already aboard I had to cut short some days in Cuba and get going. The provisioning was well on [View Full Entry]

Panama city: Large cities are generally the same. Panama City is not much different. It is going through a economical boom the skyline is covered in skyscrapers and cranes. Even the old part of the city is having a renovation job. leaving the old Spanish looking building outer walls up and and redoing the inside totally new. I only spent 2 days here. Porta Lindo: I spent 4 night in this little port village on the Caribbean Sea. I'm here waiting for my boat to Columbia. Yes I say boat. There is no roads from Panama to Columbia. I decided [View Full Entry]

We're definitely off the beaten track in panama now, a few hours out of the big city, on the carribean coast. It took a few days to sort things out, and tomorrow we set sail for Columbia aboard the 50 foot ketch Seeadler, captained by a guy named Guido. With the wind at our backs and a bit of luck we'll land in Cartagena after 5 days, probably red skinned and crusted in salt. It's been a while getting here, we stopped in a small mountain town on the way, that had some waterfalls and hot springs. Then we were in [View Full Entry]

After all the partying in Los Santos, I decided to head off a bit more west to the little town of El Valle de Anton- I took the direct bus there, being told that it would leave me at the entrance to the town... yeah right, 26km from the entrance to be precise! So a second bus later, I got to El Valle, and once again, I was welcomed by gorgeous landscapes with rolling hills (well, they do call them mountains here, but seriously, 1000m is not a mountain, is it?!) My first afternoon there was spent waiting for the rain [View Full Entry]

Spent the evening in the Hostel getting to know the people Im sharing the building with, plenty of cans from the local good stuff was consumed whilst sat on the balcony where I met Martin from Holland, hes just finishing a 5month trek around these parts so took a good few tips of him for the rest of the journey. Its nice to know he made it all around here without any Spanish so I feel much more confident now. Marc and Max from Germany are staying here too, they seem good guys and speak great English. I tagged along with [View Full Entry]

Hola from Panama! Well we´re currently in Panama...not somewhere we orginally planned we would go to, but somewhere we have ended up! Last time we left you, we were taking time out from the backpacker travels and were residing with a Tican family in Potero in Costa Rica studying spanish. Studying in playa flamingo was great fun and a good ´break´from the constant decision making needed when you´re on the road, so we were sad to say goodbye to our friends and Tican family last week, but excited to continue our travelling. Our first stop after Flamingo was Monteverde...the cloud rainforest [View Full Entry]

Day one, after leaving home at 4am in England I eventually made it to my hotel at 11pm (5am England). The flight was nice and comfortable, didnt have anybody sat next to me for the whole journey which made it a little more comfortable. Trouble started straight away though after arriving in Panama and Im the only person left stood at the baggage collection and no bag. Hmmm, I was quite lucky to get an American woman at the airport to help me out and found the bag still sat in New York. Great. So here I am in Panama still [View Full Entry]
