Background: With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama Canal Zone). The Panama Canal was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. On 7 September 1977, an agreement was signed for the complete transfer of the Canal from the US to Panama by the end of 1999. Certain portions of the Zone and increasing responsibility over the Canal were turned over in the intervening years. With US help, dictator Manuel NORIEGA was deposed in 1989. The entire Panama Canal, the area supporting the Canal, and remaining US military bases were turned over to Panama by or on 31 December 1999.

We are finally back in Boquete and unhappy to have left Panama City. I loved it there. Would have liked to stay much longer and enjoyed hanging out with Meredith and Lena. Anyway, we will do some hiking to waterfalls today and then move on to Costa Rica either tomorrow or Friday and then from there to Nicaragua. Everyone says it is wonderful there and I cannot wait. Hard to believe that our trip is coming to an end soon. Only a week and a half left. [View Full Entry]

Visiting the Rosas Scobie family in Panama March 1 to 9, 2008 Well we said good bye to Joe and Cathy at 6 a.m. in Granada, Nicaragua on February 29th and waited on the steps of the bus depot trusting the bus would come. We had bought tickets on Tica -the only bus that runs to Panama from Nicaragua and were psyched for our land travel to David, Panama and seeing my brother Tom and his family. The fare was $50. USD each. The bus arrived at 7 a.m. and was pretty comfortable, the air conditioning was not too bad…..about one [View Full Entry]

Waiting for the Cerra Punta bus
March 16th. Today we caught the Cerra Punta bus and headed up to check out the Quetzales trail. We were warned that once you caught a cab up there they would probably just drop you off at the Los Quetzales lodge and not understand that you are asking for the beginning of the trail. This is exactly what happened! We went into the lodge and asked the girls at the front desk. They gave us a map to try and find it on our own but said the guide had already left. We weren't planning on taking a guide, just [View Full Entry]

I am still in avid waiting to take the midnight bus to Panama City. I hate getting there at night so I'm on this bus arrives at 530 AM where I will meet up with the other monkey researchers. Bugging out in Panama I have so many bites and picasones, I'm itchy, from the bugs here. On Isla Popa there were chitras/ sandflies which can drive any ngabe or gringa loca, colradios/ciggers which itch for weeks ans zancaudo/ mosquitos which are not as bad since it is the dry season, even in Bocas. I wonder what awaits me the next 9 [View Full Entry]

Lucky I know the Latin American long distance bus systems, I took my sleeping bag on so could easily brave the freezing air con climate. Still didn't get too much sleep though. Arrived at 6am and had a quick nap till 9, not realising the hike I'd read about was made up timings I though I had plenty of time. I caught a minibus from the supermarket and after 30minutes we were all kicked off. I rechecked my book, and yes, Cerro Punta is 2.5 hrs away. I quickly eat some breakfast and go back to the boy at the minibus, [View Full Entry]

Sware-in was a blast. We all got our pictures taken, shook hands with important people, and got little pins. Then, we got all got drunk and went downtown. I was dragged along with a group of friends to my first ever strip club. I think the girls in the group had more fun at the club than the guys, at least they were shoving more bills down their g-strings. I had a fun time... the music was great. The next day half the group went to another town called Santa Clara which is a beach community with a nice cheap resort. [View Full Entry]

We were stuck in the border town of Paso Canoas between Costa Rica and Panama last night in the hotel ducha con raton, which roughly translates as the hotel with rats in your shower. I woke up early at 4:30 and decided to go to the bathroom and as I was doing the business I heard a small scratching and straining coming from the shower drain that was basically a hole knocked in the wall at the bottom of this shower. As I stared at the noise wondering what the heck was that, I saw a nice size very black rat [View Full Entry]

This is meant to be the blog where I take a long while to bitch and moan about how incredibly awful and simply incorrect the Lonely Planet Guide book is. But I don´t have the ganas to go into it all anymore, except to say that I had let several inconsistancies slide because I thought they must be random, isolated instances, but I have now realized they are not and have written Lonely Planet and told them just a few of their flaws and explained why I would never be using their guide again, back to Rough Guide it is. Hola once again! Sorry it has been so long in between blogs, but it isn´t easy to find a good internet cafe. So much has happened and so many stories to tell. We are going to back up to before Costa Rica (that short blog was just to let you know we were all right). We left Pedasi, Panama and headed to El Valle. We weren´t actually sure which direction we were heading until we met with a real estate agent. We spent some time looking at property and he mentioned he was going to Panama City to close a deal. David is the town that I asked the Tica bus to drop me off in, close to the border which was great as it meant I didn't have to sit on the bus for hours more as it head to the capital. I'd seen the Purple House hostel on the internet and felt it was the place for me. Andrea the owner sounded helpful and friendly on the phone and that was good enough for me. Yes the whole house is purple and just about everything in it (those of you who remember my flat in the 'hues of blue phase' [View Full Entry]
