Background: With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure (the Panama Canal Zone). The Panama Canal was built by the US Army Corps of Engineers between 1904 and 1914. On 7 September 1977, an agreement was signed for the complete transfer of the Canal from the US to Panama by the end of 1999. Certain portions of the Zone and increasing responsibility over the Canal were turned over in the intervening years. With US help, dictator Manuel NORIEGA was deposed in 1989. The entire Panama Canal, the area supporting the Canal, and remaining US military bases were turned over to Panama by or on 31 December 1999.

Well I decided to stay in David one more night because of the carnival insanity. Apparently buses are unreliable and when they do show up, they are jammed packed with people. Also you need to take taxis off of the main highway and most of the taxi drivers are partying anyways so you cant get ride. Im not sure if it would have worked out or not so I decided not to take the chance. Im really not a fan of DaVID. It is insanely hot. Im staying at Hostel called the Purple House aand absolutely everything is purple. The house, [View Full Entry]

La Salva
Boquete .. Somewhere down there

Sitting at 6,000 feet surrounded by rainforest gives your mind clarity and lots of napping time. Fortunately the place where we are staying has awesome comfortable hammocks with views of the surrounding beautiful valley. Check this place out and get here sometime in your life. http://www.losquetzales.com/ We had a morning guided hike in the national park Volcan Baru looking for birds and smelling oxygen. Awesome peace and beauty. We are the only ones here and keep saying how if this place was in Costa Rica there wouldn't be a room open. I can't figure out for the life of me [View Full Entry]

Hola! We apologise that this blog has been a bit slow in appearing, unfortunately we have no excuses, we just haven't got around to writing it until now! We're currently in Costa Rica after finally leaving Panama a month ago but we'll do our Costa Rica blog when we get to Nicaragua! (Should be sometime in the next week.) Since Christmas (which seems a long time ago now!) we managed to get around to doing some of the touristy things around Boquete one of which was the Cafe Ruiz coffee tour. It costs $14 for 3 hours and includes visits to [View Full Entry]

The whole trail is like a tropical version of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park in the USA
I walked this trail from Boquete to Guadalupe the day after climbing Volcan Baru. Going this direction is less conventional, because of the significant elevation gain between the two trailheads. Along the way, I first encountered the enchanting and seemingly misplaced Jungle Crab (see photo), then a large family of howler monkeys up in the canopy. The monkeys made quite a production in response to my presence, doing their intiimdating growling howl. One even tried to urinate on me. It was all a fun show, so I couldn't help but howl back at them for a little while. They didn't like [View Full Entry]

This is what I look like when sleep deprived, physically exhausted, and totally thrilled!
You wanna piece of me? The fearsome forest crab.

Just for some background, the precipitating event for my travel to Panama was winning an all-inclusive whitewater kayaking expedition with Boquete Outdoor Adventures. Me and my pals Justin, Sean, and Kirk won the Total Vertical Feet Challenge held last March by steepcreeks.com by kayaking for many hours in cold, less than ideal conditions down the Tellico River in Eastern Tennesee in order to prevail over a field of worthy competitors. This included running the river by moonlight to get extra laps in. We were motivated by the opportunity to explore what is supposed to be some of the best whit [View Full Entry]

La Catarata
La Catarata
Waterfall in La Amistad park
My word I am so exhausted right now I can scarcely stay sitting up! Yesterday morning Maayan and I took the bus to David and then to Cerro Punta. We quickly realized that we had been missing out on the more beautiful side of the volcano by staying the whole week in Boquete, because Cerro Punta is truly beautiful. It is really hilly and full of neatly manicured little farms and Swiss-style houses, with tons and tons of flowers and streams and waterfalls all over. I wasn't feeling all that great so Maayan took off in search of info once we [View Full Entry]
