Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

July 10th I arrived in Managua at midnight and was shuttled to the Managua Backpackers Hostel for the steamy first night in Central America. There is little that appeals to me about this capital city of 1.5 million, so I left the next morning with a couple of Brits to Leon in Northwestern Nicaragua. We found a hostel owned by English and Barbadian business partners trying for Nicaraguan citizenship that was rather busy with young travelers. I immediately signed up for volcano boarding the next day, since it seems well that’s what you do here; things with volcanoes. The volcano for [View Full Entry]

Is it a smart move to pass overland though a country five days after a military coup? The bus company seemed unconcerned because they had re-started the service through Honduras to Nicaragua after initially closing it, so following their lead we booked two tickets. In truth other than time wasting at an endless amount of military and police road blocks the bus passed though Honduras no problem. The army did board the bus at one road block which I could see visibly flustered the staff aboard the bus, but all the soldier did was look heavily armed, officious and moody, and [View Full Entry]

We have been in Granada now for 9 days and have loved it. This city is amazing. Beautiful. Granada, in our opinion, is way better than its 'rivals' Antigua and Leon. We have been taking classes at a school here and living with a family nearby. I think it is one of those 'maturing' times during our lives when we voluntarily elect to study and put ourselves through school... The classes have been good and were very cheap as well. Our family was awesome and they had a 5 year old son that never had much energy... Oh wait. The [View Full Entry]

A giant frog looking up from the toilet bowl, several frogs on the ledge overhead watching you pee, the other stall full of moths and when you flush the toilet a mass swarm of 20 moths quickly flutter from under their hiding spots of the toilet bowl and scatter to the walls. That was our bathroom in La Cruz, Costa Rica where we met our other traveling companions. In the morning, we took a bus to Nicaragua where we are pretty sure we got conned out of money where we didn’t have to pay. The man working stamped half of us [View Full Entry]

As we headed north from Granada, we saw more and more guys in jeans and cowboy hats. Estili was agriculture country through and through. While the city is not overwhelmed by a number of sights that would qualify for posters designed by the ministry of tourism, it did serve as a very good stop for us. Isle de ommetepe and Granada are very different. As such, I felt that it was very worthwhile to swing by to see a region not as touristy, and what felt like was a more authentic representation of everyday life in Nicaragua. The hostel that we [View Full Entry]

Viimeisia reissupaivia vedellaan. Ollaan hengailtu rennossa yliopistokaupungissa Leonissa nauttien hostellin altaasta, laheisen kahvilan erinomaisista pirteloista ja mehuista, iltaisin kuunnellen livemusiikkia salsaa ketkuttaen ja rommia siemaillen baareissa. Toissapaivana lahdimme valloittamaan matkamme toista tulivuorta. Cerro Negro on alueen aktiivisimpia tulivuoria ja sen rinteet ovat taysin mustaa vulkaanista hiekkaa ja kivea. Siita johtuen siella voidaan harrastaa hieman suomalaisille erikoisempaa lajia, nimittain tulivuoripulkkailua. Alas voi tulla myos seisaaltaan kuten lumilaudalla [View Full Entry]

Well, the 4th of July has been here and gone. I am in the city of Matagalpa to celebrate with volunteers from my group. We had excellent Italian food for dinner... and then I was exhausted and went back to read as opposed to out to dance. Which was fine with me. And now my stomach has turned all of that rich food and cold coffee drinks into liquid. There are more colorful ways to describe this, but I´ll spare you. However, I do not regret the food choices that I have made. Mexican food for lunch. A mint mocha frappe [View Full Entry]

The majority of June was spent in Nicaragua with my girlfriend Julia who flew down from the states to meet me. We began in the Corn Islands, which are two very small Caribbean islands off the coast. We got there by flying from Managua in what looked to be an old Soviet Cold War era aircraft; luckily we made it there and back safely. There are two islands, one is Big Corn and the other is Little Corn. We spent most of our time on Little Corn, which was a 30 minute boat ride from Big Corn. Little Corn is very [View Full Entry]

So after making it back safely to Managua, myself and 3 others (Dave from the UK, his GF Jenna from Perth, and our Swiss Miss, Josiane) from the Corn Islands decided to arrange a taxi, ala ‘flashpacking’ to Granda. Granada is a colonial city that was discovered some time ago by the yanks, and is described as the Jewel in Nicaraguas crown. I was scared it would remind my of Antigua in Guatemala which I visited 6 years ago and dispised due to the American influence, but I was surprised by Granada and likened it to San Cristobel de la Casa [View Full Entry]

We were able to take a collectivo bus from the ferry dock to a junction about 5 kilometers from Granada. From there it was a short moto taxi ride from the junction to Granada. Our driver cracked me up. He didn't know where our hostel was, and didn't want to look at the map we were holding to find out. He insisted the central park was his destination. Whatever, the hostel was two blocks off the park. Hostel Oasis is a great place to stay in the city. It has a small dipping pool, hammocks, clean dorms and good decor. Its [View Full Entry]
