Granada, mn thuis basis in Nicaragua. Voor een week heb ik hier rondgehangen. De vulkanen beklommen, geluierd aan de omliggende meren en laguna's. Maar zoals altijd is er een tijd van komen en gaan. Op naar mn volgende bestemming. Honduras! Eerst maar snel naar de Bay Islands, hopelijk ben ik nog optijd voor de walvishaaien! Daarna moet ik snel een plaatsje in een hostel zien te vinden. Na 4 weken in Costa Rica had ik het wel gezien. Prijzen als thuis en mensen die spontaal Engels tegen je lullen. Even waande ik me in de nieuwste vereenigde staat. De dag volgend op deze nare ervaring heb ik mn reis naar de grens ingezet. 150 km afgelegd in 7 uur, tsja het bussysteem is niet zo goed. Er zijn directe bussen van Costa Rica naar Nicaragua maar die gaan voornamelijk van hoofdstad naar hoofdstad. Daar was ik niet en daar wilde ik ook niet heen. Dus een publicbus naar de grens genomen. The third module of our Tucan trip has been travelling down from Antigua (Guatemala) to San Jose (Costa Rica), via Honduras (Copan, Tela and Roatan in Bay of Islands), Nicaragua (Granada, Ometepe Island) and finally down to San Jose itself. Jetzt war es soweit, ich musste Abschied nehmen von Little Corn Island und der Karibik und dem speziellen Karibikfeeling die Pazifikkueste mit Leon, Granada, Ometepe etc. wartet schon... In der letzten Nacht auf Little Corn ist mir noch ein Teil eines Ameisen- oder Termitennests - so genau konnte ich das nicht zuordnen - welches an der Holzdecke ueber meinem Bett hing, auf das Moskitonetz gefallen und dann begann das grosse Krabbeln. Einige von den Dingern hab ich immer noch in meinem Rucksack und somit auch nach Leon zwangsversetzt. So das Ticket in den Haenden, kann es endlich losgehen auf die Islas del Maíz (Corn Islands). Die Rio Escondido fuellt sich so langsam und als ich denke, nun koennte sie eigentlich ablegen, kommt alles anders - einchecken auf Nicaragüense... Das heisst erst einmal alle wieder von Bord bis das Schiff leer ist, eine grosse dicht gedraengte Menschentraube bildet sich am Pier vor dem Schiff. Dann werden Schwimmweste verteilt, von vorne nach hinten, die natuerlich nicht fuer alle reichen und dann werden die Namen aus der Passagierliste einzeln aufgerufen, welche bei dem Laerm nicht einfach zu verstehen sind und alles in [View Full Entry]

Thanks to all of you on the Great Corn Island who made us feel comfortable and at home. Our stay at the Hotel Best View was most pleasant. This was our second time stayiing at this hotel, only this time I arrived quite ill with measles. After a tiring 7 hour journey from Granada, we arrived in the town of Leon. We really slummed it in a very very very basic hostel, 75 cents per night!!! Leon looked a bit more authentic than Granada at first impression, and is home to the largest Cathedral in Central America, which from the outside looks very decayed, and on the inside, beautiful. We purchased a football, and decided to play keep ups in the busy main square where the Cathedral is located. We arrived in Granada in the afternoon. It was very hot, and the bus station is right in the towns very busy market place. We found our hostel, and spent the rest of the day looking around this colonial looking town. We had a great pizza in a nice Italian restaurant, and just spent the rest of the day looking around. The drive across the border from Monteverde to Nicaragua took 4 hours. We made a journey from Rivas, then taxi to San Jorge, and then a ferry across the lake to the Island of Ometepe. Ometepe is dominated by an impressive volcano on its horizon, a Hollywood looking Volcano! The ferry wasn't an official one, and was an experience! We were all crammed in to the lower deck, us and many locals, and there was a strong wind, so it was fairly rough water. Die Geschichte mit den Wahlbeobachtern, mit denen ich von Bluefields nach Corn Island fahren kann, hat sich doch super angehoert, oder? Blieb leider auch nur eine Geschichte... Der Typ hat uns zwar noch am Hotel abgeholt und zum Pier gebracht, wollte dann noch etwas zum Trinken und Essen holen und ist dann nicht mehr aufgetaucht... Ok, 20 Dollar Entwicklungshilfe und eine Erfahrung reicher, aber ich war nicht der einzige, wir waren noch mehr am Pier, die auf ihn hereingefallen sind.
