Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

WOW MAIL SHOUTOUTS!!!! So I run into the guy from the post office that delivers around Somoto. He speaks English and is probably the only person in this town who knows my name. I always know it´s him when I hear ¨Hi Molly!¨in Somoto. At any rate, he was like, hey you got a box! And did I ever! All the way from New Zealand! Apparently it takes a helluva lot less time for A BOX OF AWESOMENESS to arrive than, say, the three month letter timeline. Shannon, I opened it in the park but didn´t get through all of it, [View Full Entry]

Tuesday morning early we all took a private shuttle from Granada to San Juan del Sur (which is on the southwest coast of Nicaragua on the Pacific side). Although it was hot and muggy in Managua and Granada, the heat was not oppressive. Well San Juan del Sur was a good bit warmer and muggier. Fortunately there were breezes from the ocean at times, but at other times there was no wind and it was pretty damn hot. After checking into the hotel we walked around town a bit and then down to the town beach to check it out - [View Full Entry]

On Tuesday we made our way from Managua to the Island of Ometepe. The island is formed by 2 extinct volcanos and is surrounded by the Lago de Nicaragua. The lake was originally joined to the sea but was closed off due to volcanic activity, resulting in sea fish being trapped in the lake. As a result the Lago de Nicaragua is one of the few places in the world which has freshwater sharks. We arrived on the island and jumped on the last bus which runs around the island, luckily there was quite a group of gringo's on the bus [View Full Entry]

When we arrived in the capital of Nicaragua from El Salvador we decided to head straight for the city of Granada for a few days. We both felt that we needed a couple of days in the same place and it also meant that we could do all the boring things like laundry etc. Granada is another colonial city and was very pretty. On our first full day there we explored the city, climbed up the bell tower of one of the churches for views of the volcano from the city (it was so lovely and cool compared to the humidity [View Full Entry]

Who would have thought? Not me. I had no idea what Nicaragua had to offer. This country really surprised me. I didn't travel through the country extensively, but the things I did get to see were beautiful. I managed to catch up with my friend Elijah (from San Fran) in Granada, Nicaragua. He has friends who live in the town, so he ended up kicking it in Granada for three weeks. He was traveling two weeks ahead of me. We got to swim in two lagoons that are located inside volcano craters. The first lagoon which is closer to Granada was [View Full Entry]

I had traveled for 8 years without ever really getting sick. That changed a few nights ago in Esteli, Nicaragua. The same night Drew landed in Managua. Coincidence? I think not. ;-) We took the Tica bus out of San Sal through Honduras into Nicaragua and jumped off in Esteli instead of going all the way into Managua. We had heard it was a great place to see the true country. It really was. We only saw one other tourist while we were there, a white man in his 50’s that looked as lost as most of the stray dogs on [View Full Entry]

Nicaraguans ("Nicas") are a very stern people. Not a lot of smiling or friendliness toward us gringos or toward each other from what I could see. They have been polite to us - but minimally. I guess widespread poverty and a civil war in the past 30 years might do that to a people. Nicaragua means "the land of lakes and volcanoes" - the landscape is very lush and pretty during the rainy season and there are many volcanoes that you can see off in the distance... but there is a lot of poverty... random people walking down roads everywhere between [View Full Entry]

29 May 2009 Friday 8pm, Esteli office Well. Decided to get out of my site for a while and come to Esteli for the weekend. Not gonna lie, though, don’t like leaving when the boy is still there. But he has to work tomorrow and has class Sunday and it’s fine. I have a ton of stuff to do tonight and tomorrow. Stuff to buy. Stuff to do. And am going out to Moncha’s for Mother’s Day tomorrow. I am in the office, blessedly on wireless, and it feels like I am in college again, preparing for an all nighter. Except [View Full Entry]

Leon After leaving the fun filled metropolis of Teguicigalpa, I settled into a chicken bus expedition across the border. All was going really fine and I was feeling quite proud of my amazing spanish skills until at a transfer point I saw my pack drive off on top of a shuttle bus without me on it. I was in line for my quesadilla at the time so could only stand and watch. The bus driver had definitely told me quince minutos until it was time to go. Lucky for me, I just went out to the road, waited a while and [View Full Entry]
