Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Day 217: Muchos Travelling I wasn't sure how far I'd get today. In the absence of direct buses to Granada from Monteverde (apart from the uber-expensive tourist shuttles that is), my journey was invariably going to involve a lot of waiting around at stops and terminals and slow transport on the public buses that would certainly pick up anyone and everyone they encountered along the way. First journey would take me only as far as the panamerican highway, about sixty kilometres away. Although this doesn't sound far, when you're on heavily pot-holed dirt roads in a rickety old bus overlooking [View Full Entry]

Strolling on the beach

Granada is the second biggest town in Nicaragua and a pretty colonial town with a very European main square and pedstrianised streets. The hostel was a pleasant surprise - clean (!!) dorms with decent warm showers and even a pool! The hostel in San Juan had not only caused my backpack to get soaked during the rain storm despite being in my room but had also had people removing cockroaches from their faces during the night and also having to witness the odd sexual experience in a huge dorm room of 14 when everyone else was trying to sleep. Some people!! [View Full Entry]

it has been a trip here. the drive from the airport in managua to the town of san juan del sur is crazy. the roads are terrible. it took about two and a half hours. at some points the driver would have to almost come to a stop just to drive over some bumps and other times he would drive super fast driving really close to the cars driving in the other direction. the town is very nice. it is a surfing and fishing village that seems to be catered around tourists. there are many dogs and cats wandering the roads [View Full Entry]

Hola, i just returned from a 10 day trip from Rancho Santana, Nicaragua which is a investment property 45 minutes east of Rivas along the coast. Its a 2 1/2 hour drive from Managua and the last apx 45 minutes were all bumpy dirt roads. It has supposively some of the best surf in Nicaragua and we caught a small swell just to prove that. As soon as we exit the plane we are met by the guy who's house we are to work on. There are 3 of us Greg, Tim and myself. Greg got his trip for free in [View Full Entry]

Well...I know I haven't written in a short while, in part because the last few days haven't been all that interesting, at least to read about. I also am at a public internet source, so I'm paying to write this so it really will be short. Anyway, here is the quick recap... Since I last wrote you, I made it to the small town of San Juan de Oriente, to talk with some people on pottery. I brought along a bi-lingual friend who translated and the long and short is I have at least one contact for some interesting items to [View Full Entry]

I arrived in San Juan Del Sur after a long bus journey from Monteverde via a hot a rather scummy town called Rivas. I had left at 6am and then spent 8am til 11:30am sat on the side of the motorway waiting for my bus to the Nicaraguan border. I had various amusing conversations with locals while I was waiting which helped to pass the time! Most of them looked at me funny as I was in the middle of nowhere alone with huge bags waiting for 3 hours for a bus - i suppose I would have done the same [View Full Entry]

Nicaragua was the country I looked forward to visiting the most while planning this trip, and a few hassles aside it was a realy great place. We probably could have given it some more time, but with only five days left to be back in Costa Rica we decided to hit the beach there for a bit. After writing the last entry we decided to tour around the city of Granada for a bit while the sun was lowering in the sky. Across from the central park there was a tractor pulling a series of trolley carts and for 35 cents [View Full Entry]

Ich bin da! Grenada/Nicaragua.
