Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

In Costa Rica now but feel the need to write something about my time in Nicaragua. Well defiantely the poorest central american country along with Honduras. Lots of beggars many children. First stop was Esteli which was a really nice town lots of cowboy types walking around and beautiful scenery. Then onto Leon i thought it was pretty grim considering its meant to be one of the highlights of Nicaragua. Within 2 hours of been in the big foot hostel somebody booked in and pulled the security boxes of the walls in the dormitories and stole peoples stuff this with people [View Full Entry]

Hay español abajo! I flew from Peru to Nicaragua, via Miami on 05/06/09. Not the most direct route you might be thinking but it was the cheapest way of getting there. My reason for leaving South America was to catch up with somebody (Alyssa) I had met in Guatemala who was studying and travelling for 6 weeks, whilst in between jobs in the States. I studied at a Spanish language school, La Mariposa, from 07/06 to 27/06. The school was set up on a not for profit basis two years ago by a British women, Paulette, who donates the profits from [View Full Entry]

So we arrived in Leon, Nicaragua early in the afternoon Saturday. We have been staying at the Big Foot Hostel here and have enjoyed creating amazing meals in the kitchen (not a lie). Special thanks to Aaron and your meat creation you showed me at school, we have been eating that the whole time. Beans, beef, onions, corn, tomato sauce. Delicious. Sunday. The first whole day we have in Nicaragua and we hear of an "Indian Horse Race" and a cock fight. We definately wanted to check something like this out so we went with a few others to our wonderful [View Full Entry]

Aaaaaa....paratiisi. Nain on mennyt pian viikko. Enta mita sitten syomme. N [View Full Entry]

Hostellimme meren rannalla

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for the sweet comments and positive feedback about my entries. They feel good when I´m in need of something familiar. Well, i just returned from the isla de Ometepe. For those who aren´t familiar, it is the island of circles and spirals located in Lake Nicaragua. The indigenous ancestors of Nicaragua, called the Nahualts, referred to this island of two volcanoes as the promised land and as the geographic heart of their country. This location was believed to be where their gods existed and no one was allowed to walk the island back in the [View Full Entry]

So off to the Corn Islands in Nicaragua I went, armed with Rian and Katie both Dive Masters from Altons, who were looking for a mini holiday away from their big holiday (well they have both been in Utila for 4+ months “working”!). It took a ferry to La Ceiba, a bus to San Pedro, overnight in San Pedro, a 12 hour bus to the capital of Nicaragua, Managua, overnight in Managua (in the dodgiest area, and remember this is Central America!), then our little Cessna flight to Big Corn, before the little lancha (fast boat) across to Little Corn - [View Full Entry]

Well, decided to come on down to San Lucas to use the internet. Glad there´s a cyber here, though usually I just go onto Somoto, today no me pide. I need to take more photos of the garden. The green beans are about 3 inches tall, the radishes are a couple of inches tall, the onions from the bulbs from the Cahails are also about 3 inches tall, and the carrots and beets have sprouted, as has the dill. So we´re doing good! Also, the squashes and cucumber and zucchini have all sprouted, too! I´ve been visiting the women of the [View Full Entry]

Hola! Taalla ollaan edelleen. Aamulla huomasimme tulleemme upean puutarhan keskelle. Taalta oli kiva aloittaa tutustuminen saareen. Vuokrasimme maastopyorat ja poljimme uimaan virkistaville lahdealtaille. Seuraavana paivana lahdimme aamun koitteessa valloittamaan saaren toista tulivuorta eli Maderasia. Nousu oli kuuma, mutainen, [View Full Entry]

Hola mi familia y amigos, On Sat. I completed my spanish lessons (20 hours) with my teacher, Juan Jose Garanja. I am beyond pleased with the results. I´ll admit, i was a bit overwhelmed at first, but they paid off. I am now able to speak in all of the tenses and my vocabulary continues to build. As a thank you to mi maestro, i promised to show him how to do yoga. He loved it and was determined to do his sun salutations every day before he surfed or ran. I met my ausie friend at playa maderas and got [View Full Entry]
