San Juan Del Sur Travel Blogs

Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

We´ve got a lot of love for Nicaragua. Spent most of our time there in San juan del sur, a litttle surf town where we were trying to hone our surfing skills. Came across a trio of amusing Texan boys who we went on a deep sea fishing adventure with and later cooked up a storm with the prized, massive yellow-fin tuna. After surfing different spots up and down the coast we took some time out from our hectic schedules and relaxed for a couple of days at an organic hideout by a lake where we feasted on some great food, [View Full Entry]

Well, this is something nobody thought would happen!!! And that is exactly what a lot of people told me when they saw me walking the streets of good old San Juan del Sur!!! I left San Miguel de Allende at 6.30 am when the taxi picked me up to take me to Queretaro where I jumped on the bus to Mexico International Airport. Again, that bus is absolutely awesome and I had a great time, this time actually making the trip through the country whilst it was light out. So it was nice to finally see a little bit more [View Full Entry]

Can't get enough of these
I'm having trouble coming up with titles for these things anymore, so forgive me. Alright after the island I came to San Juan Del Sur. I'd head from so many people that it is the biggest tourist destination in Nicaragua and super crowed with gringos, so I wasn't sure what I was going to think about it. So it was a nice little surprize when I get here, run into a friend I met in Granada who is living here, go to a bar on the beach and count 4 people in total on the beach! I knew I was [View Full Entry]

Harbour in San Juan del Sur
Funky little crab holes ... or something like that

I finished up my travels through Costa Rica with a stop in La Fortuna - near the Arenal volcano. It was a nice place to hang out (met a cool chick from North Van and a dude from Amsterdam) and play some cards, swim in swimming holes, hike to waterfalls and also relax in the Hot Springs! And relax we did! There were 16 pools with 16 different temperatures of water - all lit up beautifully (we went in the evening) and a swim up bar in a couple of the pools also - along with little waterfalls everywhere! I felt [View Full Entry]

Wow--Trinity let me write this blog! I'm so nervous... but she promised to edit it, so I can let go of my writer's block and get started! After a day in this beautiful beach I told Trin "let's get land HERE!" The beauty of this piece of the Pacific Ocean was just overwhelming. Then we found out all about the development plans for the area and we started second guessing my suggestion. Basically, the entire area around Nicaragua’s most touristy place, the little town of San Juan del Sur is taking major steps in being the next Cancun (or Costa [View Full Entry]

After the lake we went looking for a beach as we have not seen one for a few weeks! We were recomended San Juan Del Sur by Lisa a Canadian girl we met at the lake, she has been living there for a year as a massage therapist. The place was nice enough, but very quiet. The beach was huge but it got quite windy which was nice to cool down, but I hated it as I felt like a peice of sandpaper, so I spent most of my time in the water anmd left Michelle to lounge about. Our favorite [View Full Entry]

night draws in over this pacific border beach village resort
Decided to go and relax for a few days on the atlantic coast in Nicaragua so I am heading to the coast and to a place called San Juan Del Sur which is on the border with Costa Rica with a new found love Maria Olga lara Rojas. Scariest moment of my trip so far when I catch the bus from Granada to Rivas and the conductor type guy charges me two fares for putting my rucksack on the top of the minivan. I found out that noone else on the bus pays for this and after challenging him as I [View Full Entry]
