We got into San Juan del Sur on Sunday and stayed sunday night in a nice little hospedaje. We met up with some other travelers we have seen several times and went out to a nice restaurant to treat ourselves before camping. The next day we caught a shuttle to Maderas, which is the beach that everyone goes to surf. San Juan del Sur is a little beach town right on a bay, so there isnt any waves.
Once we arrived at Maderas we walked to the Beach just south, Majagual. There is one hostel and its a bit pricy so we decided to camp! We set up 10 meters from the water, perfect location. We stayed on Majagual for 4 days. Pretty nice little spot. Theres one hostel, two restaurants, and lots of water. During the day pretty much all we did was body surf and hang out. Oh yea....we bought a surf board! Haha some traveler from germany was selling his board for pretty cheap and we decided to go ahead and buy it since we have all of cost rica left! $80 for the board, with wax on it, a leash, and some new fins. WalkingIts about a 15 minute walk from the Tourist beach to our beach, Majagual.
bad deal eh?
Theres a guy from Holland who stays at the hostel nearby for like 2 months every year and he rents out spear guns. We got one for a day and went out to catch dinner. We shot seven fish and kept five. Ben shot the biggest puffer fish I have ever seen. We later found out that puffer fish are poisonous. Darn. We made a little fire and cooked the fish on the beach. Not a bad life :-)
We left Thursday morning to head back to San Juan del Sur for the weekend. Not sure where were headed next!

Dean and I met there in 2002! We just went back for the first time last summer. An ozzie man used to own a hostel that isn't there anymore... I was staying there and he was staying at some random 2 bedroom place. The beach is pretty, huh! Have a blast! Wish we could've made it work to meet up in CR. Have fun with your new board (and wax!!!) Love the blog, keep the entries coming! Al
Hi Pete and Ben,
I'm sending some of your blog to Chris. You will have to compare camping stories! I've had four letters and two phone calls from Chris so far. He sounds tired but upbeat. He's in the field now--qualifying on his weapon, doing land navigation, etc. When he gets his computer, I'll send you his email address. That should be in the second week of August. His classes start August 17. By the way, were the fish good to eat?
