it has been a trip here. the drive from the airport in managua to the town of san juan del sur is crazy. the roads are terrible. it took about two and a half hours. at some points the driver would have to almost come to a stop just to drive over some bumps and other times he would drive super fast driving really close to the cars driving in the other direction.
the town is very nice. it is a surfing and fishing village that seems to be catered around tourists. there are many dogs and cats wandering the roads and children playing futbol in the streets.
i went to a free yoga class last night at sunset on the beach. it was very relaxing and the instructor even gives quick shoulder and feet massages during meditation!
my second day here it started to rain. it did not stop raining until the next day when i was informed our town just missed the hurricane. the beach is a little torn up but other than that it is back to normal. it is sunny now in the 90´s.
life has been very easy going here. there is a holiday this week ¨dia de la madre¨or mothers day and all the schools are closed. because of this i do not start spanish classes or my volunteer job until next week. but i have already had a crash course in spanish. with my host family, volunteer coordinator, around the town, even with other english speaking volunteers, has all been in spanish. i am learning new phrases and words by the minute.
typical foods are gallo pinto (beans and rice), salad flavored with lime juice, avacado, cheese, and eggs. the nicaraguan version of guacamole is chunks of avacado and boiled eggs. it is tasty with rice.
next week i start spanish classes and volunteering. i will also continue yoga and i am going to take a salsa dancing class. it is going to be fun here!
