Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Greetings from Nicaragua! We left Costa Rica on the 24th after heading back through the capital to perform some business and eat Taco Bell. I had a Crunchwrap Supreme and it tasted delightful. It tasted like the same dirty meat they use back in the states, so it was a welcomed and heart-warming treat. We caught a fancy bus (complete with air conditioning...the first we´d experienced in 2 weeks) after finding out that we were too late to book tickets for the more popular bus line and having to run around San Jose at 7 am. The people were not too [View Full Entry]

BIG DROPS, LOTS OF ROCKS So I´ve moved on from the friendly beach breaks and white sands and happy tourist lands of San Juan Del Sur to find myself living in a dingy little room and the end of a dirty little road next to a sometimes stinky little river right next to a world famous surf break: Popoyo. I´ve been here nearly a week now, and i learned early on that this wave does not mess around. If the size of the drop doesn´t trip you up, surely the rocky reef will get you or your board at low tide. [View Full Entry]

Hola mi familia y amigos, On Sat. I completed my spanish lessons (20 hours) with my teacher, Juan Jose Garanja. I am beyond pleased with the results. I´ll admit, i was a bit overwhelmed at first, but they paid off. I am now able to speak in all of the tenses and my vocabulary continues to build. As a thank you to mi maestro, i promised to show him how to do yoga. He loved it and was determined to do his sun salutations every day before he surfed or ran. I met my ausie friend at playa maderas and got [View Full Entry]

Buenas Dias! i am finally here in san juan del sur at the casa oro hostel. i spent about 2 hours in line at customs the morning i arrived in managua due to the extra details of screening people with a heat-sensored camera to detect possible flu symptoms??? for those of you who know me and my minor anal retentive ways- you could imagine how crazy i was thinking my nica driver was going to leave me at the airport since so much time had passed. But, wouldn´t you know it, there was juan standing with his face pressed against the [View Full Entry]

It is good to be back in Suan Juan De Sur. It is odd returning to a place yet at the same time it is comforting. Still I always seem to get lost in this village. It must be the fung shui messing with me. So I checked into the Xamily hostel and went for a walk. As I was walking down to the market to buy some surf wax, I almost bailed and slid a few feet almost into a pole. Turns out I just stepped on a giant pile of dog pooh. This mound was unbelievable big and I [View Full Entry]

We ventured up to Nicaragua by bus arriving at night in a town called San Juan Del Sur. This was a weird one because they have some issues with power. So the place is really dark with the buzzing of generators to power the restaurants and houses. Its a cool spot, another fishing port, but with nice yachts and other pleasure craft mored in the bay next to town. It had a good vibe as everyone was friendly and easy going. Sensing that we had been followed again by a guy that we met south america after seeing him in numerous [View Full Entry]
