Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Soooo....much has happened in the last week or so, and some of it not very good. But, we'll start with the good stuff first: Primero, I'm going to post a couple pictures of a wave sequence my buddy Keith caught while we were in Popoyo. One of the best and biggest waves I got all day, and luckily he got the whole thing. As you can see, I still have some things to work on...but I made the drop and I was stoooooookkkkkked. Anyways, we caught a lift out of Popoyo after sticking around a couple of extra days due to [View Full Entry]

I am sorry for the delay in blog posts, but it was because I was having a great time and the internet services were expensive and slow. When I left you last I was heading to the city of Leon. We spent little time here, but really enjoyed the street markets and cheap movie theaters. FYI dont see the movie GI Joe. We were awake bright and early on our first day here by explosions over our hostel/city. We thought maybe someone was invading the city and we were kind of on edge, but it turns out we showed up for [View Full Entry]

It seems like everyone in this town has a war story. I´m in the northern city of Leon, waylaid here for a week while I wait out a flat spell of no waves. To make a long story short, I fell in with a rowdy crowd of Australians back in Popoyo and we were on our way to El Salvador when we stopped over here in Leon for the weekend. However, the modern miracle of internet surf forecasting told me there would be no swell til next weekend, and so Í´ve decided to stay here and enroll in language school for [View Full Entry]

After my last update I spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around Leon and taking picture after picture of church after church, something in which this country is most certainly not lacking. The buildings are all painted in these fantastic bright colors, and there is more branding/advertising here than in the US. Apparently if you don't want to paint your own walls/store/house a major multinational company will paint it for you, with their logo! So you'll be driving through the countryside and walls will be painted with HUGGIES, OREOS, KOTEX, etc. Leon was much the same, although one thi [View Full Entry]

This blog is kind of going to backtrack a little only because I forgot to mention previously that due to the swine flu pandemic they had each person walk past a heat sensing camera before immigration to check for high fevers. Luckily I made it through, and after stopping by the internet cafe and exchanging dollars for cordobas (20 to 1) I finally braved the taxi stands outside the airport. I was immediately latched onto by a driver who wanted to charge me 12 dollars for the trip from the airport to Managua. I said I wanted to go to Mercardo [View Full Entry]

Hola !

Viimeisia reissupaivia vedellaan. Ollaan hengailtu rennossa yliopistokaupungissa Leonissa nauttien hostellin altaasta, laheisen kahvilan erinomaisista pirteloista ja mehuista, iltaisin kuunnellen livemusiikkia salsaa ketkuttaen ja rommia siemaillen baareissa. Toissapaivana lahdimme valloittamaan matkamme toista tulivuorta. Siita johtuen siella voidaan harrastaa hieman suomalaisille erikoisempaa lajia, nimittain tulivuoripulkkailua. Alas voi tulla myos seisaaltaan kuten lumilaudalla [View Full Entry]

Corn Island on taakse jaanytta elamaa. Tana iltana saavuimme viimeiseen kohteeseemme talla matkalla.
