Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

This blog is so late. Supposed to post this August 20 of this year urghh. I'm back in the USA safe and sound :). But the memories are fresh, so i have to look back and write about what happened during my short solo backpacking trip. The girl that I was supposed to meet in Nicaragua got robbed in Managua days before I left LA for Costa Rica. One morning I suddenly found myself walking out of Gaudy's hostel in San Jose, CR and walking all the way to the Tica bus station. And then boom! I bought my bus ticket. [View Full Entry]

Granada
Granada
Granada city
Hello all, When I first heard of Granada, I must at the same moment, thing about Granada in Spain. The city is very colourful and the streets are very clean. It’s easy to go around and enjoy a lemonade or just to grab a beer and stay outside, because it’s too damn hot! 3 days are totally enough to stay here. I went to Laguna de Apoyo, Pueblos Blañcos and Isletas. Besides you still have Granada itself to discover and it’s really nice. It makes me remember of Salvador or Manaus in Brazil. I always have a déjà vu feeling :-) [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

We arrived in Managua, Nicaragua on Tuesday night, Oct. 13th, and only stayed until the next morning. The little part of Managua we saw was interesting and disconcerting at the same time. Everyone we met was extremely friendly, and yet they warned us that crime was rampant nearby. Given the warmth of almost everyone we met, it was hard to believe the bad intentions of the people we didn't meet. Our hotel was just a block west of the Tica bus station. The hotel staff 'allowed' us to walk back that far in search of food. Any further east, or any [View Full Entry]

The 24th we spent traveling from the island to the mainland to end up in Granada. The city was the colonal capital of Nicaragua and was recently completely overhauled and given a fresh coat of paint. It looks like it did 100 years ago just with cars and more whities walking around. It is a beautiful city with many old churches and new coffee shops to enjoy. We stayed at the Bearded Monkey hostel last night but left today because of a British woman who sounded like she was a drunk 19th century street urchin who kept everyone up late. It took us about 6 hours to get to Managua - the capital of Nicaragua. We were in a nice air conditioned bus though with a bathroom, so the time wasn't so bad. Once in Managua, we took a taxi to a bus station and then caught a bus to Granada. Travelers be warned: locals see white skin and assume this means we're rich and they can rip us off. On multiple occasions during this trip, taxi drivers, bus drivers, etc. tried to charge us extra for transport. The smartest thing is to ask the locals who are also on the [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Nicaragua!
Welcome to Nicaragua!
Just as we crossed the border from Honduras to Nicaragua.
Well, we had an unexpected vacation from school. We had one case of H1N1 at school and they closed in down to be safe and clean the whole school. This meant added time on ou r already existing break for the long weekend of Honduras independence day. Sarah K., Pam, and I were already going to travel to Nicaragua but we decided to go early so that Libby and Kallie could come too, as they have plans for Roatan on the weekend. We decided to come here Sunday and then leave Friday. I will then catch a ride with Jimmy and [View Full Entry]

Well we made it...just barely. Our trip´s first problem arised within 5 minutes of reaching the airport. The lady at the counter who punches all the keys, seems to know what shes doing, but truly doesnt told us that without proof of our leaving Costa Rica, she could not let us on the flight. Natalie and I only had one way tickets, but we have return flights from Mexico City a few months into the future. Apperently a flight from another country is not sufficient for the lady as proof that we will be leaving Costa Rica. They dont want us [View Full Entry]

Well i successflly completed my first week in Nicaragua! It has been a lot of fun but super busy! We are both volunteering and taking classes at Casa Xalteva, so I spend around 12 hours of my day there! Casa Xalteva doubles as a Spanish School for foreigners and also daycare of sorts for local children. I get in at 8am every day; from 8-10am I tutor a great 12 yr boy with his homework. (they have tutoring/homework help for 2 hours each day; if there are enough volunteers its 1 on 1). Three days a week they have a local [View Full Entry]

I am in Granada for three weeks at language school before we move into our house in Managua. While here in Granada I am staying with a wonderful host family! My madre nicaraguense is an older woman named Nubia. She is super sweet and is always teaching me about the food, the mercados (markets), the culture, etc. Right now in our house its only her and her husband Francisco. They also have a woman (Saida) who comes 6 mornings a week to help with cleaning (they clean their houses here daily!) and washing clothes. We also have many pets! A lora [View Full Entry]
