Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Hola! Itīs been a while ... And travelling has been continually very good. The concept of work is just so foreign and scary right now! After being very proud of my excellent health while others have been dropping like flies, today has seen some very odd symptoms for me. The room has fortunately just stopped spinning and I can kinda type. Also good is that I havenīt seen any random blue dots for a while. But I wish that I was on any of the other computers in this Granadan internet cafe as everyone elseīs is in focus whereas mine really [View Full Entry]

So thereīs a phrase here in La Prusia the chicos like to use, "Salvaje Man"(Savage Man). Its a favorite endearing expression here. Other necessary phrases include "eres beliiiiin"(your craaaaazy) and "whatzupman!" And no that last expression is not a part of my English curriculum. Life is active as always here in Nicaragua. Two weekends ago a few of us decided to take a weekend and go to Leon, a college town in the north. The town is very similar to Granada. It is very colorful and very laid back. Tranquilo, even. The city favors FSLN to the max and just loves [View Full Entry]

Yetserday crossed over into Nicaragua and arrived late in Granada after 2 very long travelling days! Needless to say we had a good Saturday night out at cafe nuit which didnīt bode well for ziplining today, especially when they bounced the wires up and down! Had an interesting afternoon, the usual thunder storm combined with no power all day meant there was not alot to do! We sadly left Roatan on Friday after spending the week chilling out on the beach and getting bitten alive by sandflies at the same time! The reef there is great and spent alot of time [View Full Entry]

Here we are in the heart of Granada, Nicaragua..... and having a great time as always. What a great city this is, and when I say that we are in the heart I really mean it. Our hotel is on the main square.... facing the central park and Cathedral. We are staying for 4 nights at the lovely Hotel Plaza Colon.... and it has now taken me over an hour to upload these 14 pics... so I am done for the night and will keep this short. Everyone said that we would love this town, and I can see why. Granada [View Full Entry]

Life here is as exciting as always. A lot has happen so I'll try my best to condense it to something digestible. This past weekend, we had plans to leave Granada to visit some place else in Nicaragua. I've been in the same place for over a month and it would be nice to get out and see a bit of the country. However, on Thursday and Friday a lot of us got rather sick. Nothing too serious. More like there was something in the food which our bodies rejected. Friday was a big recovery day so our hopes of escaping [View Full Entry]

Lose the beer, man

Got up early this morning to make our last destination before heading back to Costa Rica. We did want to go on to Leon but time is running out. Got to Granada around noon and went directly to the Old Market in Masaya. Very famous for their handy crafts, mainly woodwork and carvings. I, of course, forgot my camera and did not get any photos. We wanted to buy some souvenirs here but the items were more expensive than in town because it is a big shopping area for foreigners. So I think we will stop buy some local markets before [View Full Entry]

Roatan was absolutely fantastic - easily the highlight of my trip so far. I would have stayed for longer than I did if it werenīt so expensive and it also felt like cheating a bit because it really wasnīt like the rest of Latin America! There are so many expats and tourists there that it had a completely different culture and most people there spoke English so it was very easy! The island was really laid back and there were loads of young people there giving it a great atmosphere. It was sunny most of the time I was there and [View Full Entry]

Hola! Iīve gotten all the way to Nicaragua at this point, and again, have had a great week :) Unfortunately I still canīt get my pictures up...Iīll be in San Jose Costa Rica in a few days though, I have high hopes for the internet connection there... We left Copan about a week ago - caught a bus to San Pedro, and made a last minute connection to Tela. Tela is a small Honduran beach town, and it was my first beach in nearly 3 weeks in Central America! I was quite excited to get back to the beach. Although the [View Full Entry]

Buenas todos mundos. Que tal? See, the Spanish is slowly coming through. I just finished up my third lesson and I think I'm progressing nicely. It's a combination of lessons, living with Spaniards, and being put in situations where I have to construct Spanish to get by. I wouldn't be surprised if I learned more Spanish than my students learn English during my English classes. Necessity is a great motivator in learning languages. I've been doing what I can to stay busy and to stay on top. This past week has been especially jam-packed with volunteering action. There is a volunteer [View Full Entry]

Hey All! Our time in Nicaragua is coming to an end, weīre in the old colonial town of Granada where we will spend our last few days before going north to Honduras! Nicaragua has been fantastic though...the land is stunning with rolling green hills and douzens of huge volcanos. Its really cheap here too which we like! After leaving the Corn islands we went to the town of Leon...it was a nice town with a lot of interesting history of the revolution but we didnīt feel too well during our days here so didnīt get up to much. We did go [View Full Entry]
