Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

[View Full Entry]

Arrived safe and sound!! We arrived around midday last Sunday during the last day of a week long festival here in Granada call los Hipicos. Driving into the city alone was quite the experience as people come from all over the country and other countries to take part in this week long celebration (the biggest fiesta of the year!)...and we arrived right before the parade of horses. This consists of about 3 thousand men and women on horseback! Quite the sight! Our langauge school picked us up at the airport and after many detours managed to drop all of us (theres [View Full Entry]

Is it a smart move to pass overland though a country five days after a military coup? The bus company seemed unconcerned because they had re-started the service through Honduras to Nicaragua after initially closing it, so following their lead we booked two tickets. In truth other than time wasting at an endless amount of military and police road blocks the bus passed though Honduras no problem. The army did board the bus at one road block which I could see visibly flustered the staff aboard the bus, but all the soldier did was look heavily armed, officious and moody, and [View Full Entry]

Hoi lezers, Ik ben aangekomen.

Laatste dag in Granada & Nicaragua.

Granada

Had a relaxed start to the day and we went for waffles at the waffle house. They were really good. Heather had organised our own walking tour today through Granada so we went to the bell tower and got a nice panaramic view of the city and went to the 2 other main churches there but as it was mass we just looked in the doorways! The buildings are brilliant bright colours and really stand out. We also say the memorial to the heroes of 1811. Next to this was a little art museum of the modern day artists in Granada. So day 2 of a 12 hour travel... So started with a taxi to the bus station, a bus to the border with a relatively painless crossing, and then 2 chicken buses. Thankfully it didn´t rain as our bags were on top of the 1st chicken bus. We stayed in Cocibolca which had a lovely courtyard, swimming pool and fountain with 3 turtles living in it! We got in latish, went to the tourist office to see what tours were available and then went to an Italian Don Peros for dinner. And crashed early as everyone was a little grumpy from [View Full Entry]

Well that about wraps it up. Yesterday was my last official day of volunteering. The past few weeks have been filled with lots of electrical work and trench digging. Wired and rewired three or four houses in the past month. Many of the other volunteers wanted to learn what it was all about so I began some "Sparky Classes" during work. It was all good fun and brought five people up to speed on how to set up house. A few weeks ago, a couple that lived in the project decided to get married and invited all the volunteers to attend. With my book bag stuffed with clothes, some snacks for the road, my trusty nalgene, a good book and passport I was headed to Nicaragua for the weekend. 9 hours later a bus full of 18 scruffy American kids arrived in the tourist capital of the country - Granada. There were 3 reasons why it took so long to get there; first of all CR is full of mountains and basically to get anywhere outside of the Central Valley - where I live, basically its more flat yet still mountainous. Second the roads are terrible and especially when you get stuck [View Full Entry]
