Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Hostellissa on iltapaivin melko hiljaista. Han meni vessaan ja lait [View Full Entry]

Iltapaivan sade on tulossa. Tuulee lujaa ja taivas on tumma. Lampoa on kuitenkin n. 30 astetta. Kohta sataa kaatamalla. Eraana iltapaivana menimme melomaan kajakeill [View Full Entry]

Paivat kuluvat leppoisasti espanjantuntien merkeissa. Olemme yha Granadassa.

Vaivoin pysyimme penkeilla [View Full Entry]

Tanaan jatimme Managuan eli paakaupungin. Soimme hotellilla herkullisen aamiaisen ja hyppasimme rinkkoinemme taksiin. Taksi vei meidat halisevan pienen torin laitaan, jossa pakettiautot odottivat rivissa matkustajia. Heti kun hyppasimme ulos taksista miehet juoksivat meita kohti ja alkoivat vetaa meita omaan pikkubussiinsa. Mina pidin katseen kohdistettuna hyvakuntoisimman nakoiseen autoon ja suuntasin sinne hosuvat miehet ja Pasi kannoillani. Kilpailu asiakkaista on kova, taytyy sanoa! Tunnin ajelun jalkeen saavuimme viehattavaan Granadan kaupunkiin. Minibussi jatti meidat keskustori [View Full Entry]

And here we are. So I had decided to jump the border and visit Nicaragua, despite some reservations about missing classes. But as it turned out, it was a fantastic decision as it was the best weekend of the trip! It was a very early start (5am) for our group of about 15, and I was the only non-American! Half were from Missouri as part of a school trip while the others, were scattered all over, including a group of 3 from Boston who I got on best with. It was a 6 hour drive to the border where we waited [View Full Entry]

Looking over Granada
Artsy shot

The city of Granada I left Managua after only one day and went of in search of local buses for Granada. They guy at the hostel gave me such bad directions that I had to keep walking around the neighbourhood looking for the bus stop with my very heavy backpack on my back. I eventually found it - in the area that he told me I didnt need to go to and caught the first bus that was there (old Toyota vans). The bus was empty so I was able to find a spot in the front to dump by [View Full Entry]

It has been long in the waiting and was hit hard by the economic downturn but the latest volume of "How not to Travel" has just been released, produced and distributed by the Wonder Boy Phil Panchenko. So remarkable is this fact that it has just made CNN breaking news only moments ago. 1. Do not get ill in San Juan Del Sur, a small city near the beach, because you will inevitably get a shot up the bum of penacilin and two pills, one of which is banned in 30 other countries worlwide, and the other is the most powerful [View Full Entry]

so this morning it was the howler monkeys and birds that woke us up, not the local workers. tried to sleep in the hammock, but to no avail. luis set up the van and we also have the belgium couple coming with us in the van. got to the dock and on the boat and met a woman named freuke from holland who told me good things about san juan del sur. sometimes there is just too much information to process and too many places to consider to go and definately not enough time. so then we took a taxi and [View Full Entry]
