We´ve just finished a Spanish course - really hard work - 1 on 1 with really old school teaching- lots of word lists and grammar rules etc...
We came back to our room one day and all our bags had been ransacked. They stole my camera and some money Donna had stashed. We told the hostel owner and she made a huge deal of it called the police and everything... Incidentally, the 3rd police report that I have filed so far. We were trying to make it all low key but they don´t seem to do low key here.
The cleaner got really upset thinking that we accused her... and got all heated with me in Spanish... of course I had no idea. I did think it might be her... given that it was a secure hostel and there was a Costa Rican guy from the dutch embassy there working all day right in front of our room. But didn´t let on at all.
Anyway, the cops show up and ask us questions... luckily the costa rican guy spoke fluent english and could translate. Meanwhile they let the cleaner into the room... I´m no detective but wouldn´t the first thing you learn in police 101 be not to let a suspect into the crime scene to tamper with the evidence. So she´s in the room and miraculously the camera turns up under the bed. Hehe.
The police asked us if we wanted to make a fomal complaint but we played it down and said that the money could have been pinched on the Corn Islands... we were just happy to have the camera back... etc Didn´t want the poor woman to go to jail...
After the police left, I looked at the photos on the camera and there were lots of pictures of the toilet and the bed and... get this... 1 self portrait... of the cleaner.
We showed the hostel owner the photos and I think she gave the cleaner the ass.
We cracked up badly when we saw the self portrait. hehehe

I think you should publish the photos - toilet and self portrait. Much money gone?
Yeah.. I'll try and publish the photos... some of the computers are pretty archaic here.
We lost a couple of hundred.
We also got robbed again in Somoto... see next post
