Background: The Pacific Coast of Nicaragua was settled as a Spanish colony from Panama in the early 16th century. Independence from Spain was declared in 1821 and the country became an independent republic in 1838. Britain occupied the Caribbean Coast in the first half of the 19th century, but gradually ceded control of the region in subsequent decades. Violent opposition to governmental manipulation and corruption spread to all classes by 1978 and resulted in a short-lived civil war that brought the Marxist Sandinista guerrillas to power in 1979. Nicaraguan aid to leftist rebels in El Salvador caused the US to sponsor anti-Sandinista contra guerrillas through much of the 1980s. Free elections in 1990, 1996, and again in 2001 saw the Sandinistas defeated. The country has slowly rebuilt its economy during the 1990s, but was hard hit by Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Eraana aamuna saimme houkuttelevan tarjouksen: snorklausta ja kalastelua ja edullinen hinta. Mikas siina!

Nain on mennyt pian viikko. Enta mita sitten syomme. N [View Full Entry]

Hostellimme meren rannalla

So off to the Corn Islands in Nicaragua I went, armed with Rian and Katie both Dive Masters from Altons, who were looking for a mini holiday away from their big holiday (well they have both been in Utila for 4+ months “working”!). It took a ferry to La Ceiba, a bus to San Pedro, overnight in San Pedro, a 12 hour bus to the capital of Nicaragua, Managua, overnight in Managua (in the dodgiest area, and remember this is Central America!), then our little Cessna flight to Big Corn, before the little lancha (fast boat) across to Little Corn - [View Full Entry]

Our pad...
Our beach

It became obvious within 24 hours that being on the beach and in the sea is the only place to be at this time of year so we headed for the well-reputed Corn Islands on the Caribbean coast. Listening to those around us, we flew to Big Corn Island and immediately hopped on a boat to Little Corn Island - and what a find Little Corn island is! It is a stunning, peace haven - palm tree lined white sandy beach, clear blue sea, perfect blue sunny skies and a scattering of beach huts spread mainly along the soutth side of [View Full Entry]

Imagine a small paradise, with the coconut palms, mango trees and leche growing around on the sandy beaches. The entire Little Corn Island has area of 2 sq km. There is no traffic, so you can walk barefoot the entire island within two hours. There is completely nothing to do on the Little Corn Island. Just simply laying in the hammock on the beach, reading a book and sipping cold beer. Really simple life. Everything is slow, and in that pace you have to wait 2 hours to be served in a restaurant. But hey, there is no rush when it´s [View Full Entry]

After two months of immobility, I shook the cockroaches out of my pack and loaded up the possessions I thought I would need for the next two weeks. The rest I left in a plastic container in the main house at the Ranch. I said farewell to the team of interns with whom I had shared the “winter”, promising to see them again at Thanksgiving, and headed to Esterillos, the preferred beach spot amongst the “Ranchers”. About two hours by bus on the Pacific side of Costa Rica, Esterillos offered a less-developed atmosphere than nearby Jaco or Parrita, and the owners [View Full Entry]

Riverboat crossing.
Rio San Juan.
El Castillo.

After countless hours on chicken buses, river ferries, a rickety 12 seater plane, not to mention two police reports (certain members of our party went missing for 12 hours, later to be found stranded on ¨El Bluff a shipping port 1km of the mainland of Bluefields. The police officer did have the coolest name: Manuel Casanova), we have emerged from the Corn Islands and back into civilisation. We happened to arrive during one of the worst storms in years. We were stuck for several days without electricity and water, flights were cancelled and boat drivers were demanding danger money to leave [View Full Entry]

Tim version: * Landed in tropical carribean paradise, Little Corn Island, and chilled in a beachside hut for a week. * Got my PADI diving qualifications, cracked open some coconuts, and got eaten alive by mosquitos. The version that you should be jealous of, as this place is incredible...: Little Corn is diving paradise. Be it Scuba Diving or Snorkelling, its awesome. Fishing too but meh, not my interest! Its surrounded by reefs, has a really laid back attitude, no cars or pollution creating machinery except a few generators, and is so carribean it isn´t funny. We arrived on the p [View Full Entry]

Tim version: * Took buses and boats from Leon to Managua, to Rama, then past bluefields to the Corn Islands. The version with a little more detail: Leaving Leon I was leaving after having slept for maybe 40 minutes. I was waiting all morning for the sun to come up so it was safer at the bus station and that ended up being about 6am due to a whole lot of clouds blocking it out for a while! Too bad it was raining =( A quick taxi and I´m in the bus for Managua. No other way but through Managua again! [View Full Entry]

Cruising the river
Rooster in a bag
Irony

Hey Everyone!! O.K so since i last blogged we spent another day or two in Monetzuma where we went hiking through Cabo Blanco national park, the hike should have taken an hour and a half down to the beach and apparently it´s impossible to get lost BUT Al managed to take a wrong turn somewhere and what should have taken us just over an hour took over 3 hours!!! We spent a couple of days in Costa Rica´s capital San Jose where we went up a volcano and swam in hot springs and then flew up to Nicaragua. After landing in [View Full Entry]
