Background: Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. The island of Saint Martin is shared with France; its southern portion is named Sint Maarten and is part of the Netherlands Antilles; its northern portion is called Saint-Martin and is part of Guadeloupe (France).

Hei! Lensimme pienehkolla potkurikoneella Martiniquelta Guadaloupen (Pointe A Pitre) kautta St. Martinille. St. Martin on yksi maailman pienimmista maista, joka on kahden valtion, Hollannin ja Ranskan, jakama. Olemme varanneet hotellin Marigotista, ranskalaisen puole [View Full Entry]

Hei! Tämä blogi seuraa purjehdusmatkaani Karibialla ajalla 23.2. - 11.3.2007. Vielä tässä vaiheessa minulla ei ole tietoa siitä, kuinka usein pystyn sivustoa matkani aikana päivittämään. Toivottavasti usein! Kirjoitan blogia myös englanniksi, jotta matkaani pystyy seuraamaan myös kansainväliset ystäväni. Lähden matkaan ystäväni Katin kanssa. Matkasuunnitelmamme pähkinänkuoressa: Matkamme alkaa Lappeenrannasta, josta lähdemme torstaina 22.2. iltajunalla kohti Helsinkiä. Lennämme perjantai aamuna 07:35 Air Francen lennolla Pariisiin, josta jatkamme muutaman tunnin odottelun jälkeen kohti [View Full Entry]

I do not think it was sea sickness because it was coming out both ends, but whatever it was, it hit me good while we were in St. Maarten so I do not remember much and/or can tell you much about our time there. I remember waking up in the middle of the night with an upset stomach. I got up early because I signed up to go deep sea fishing. I can not count the number of times I went to the bathroom and kept wondering if it was so smart to fishing, but knew I could not get my [View Full Entry]

After a whirlwind tour of Genada, Trinidad & Tobago and Venezuela which was viewed from a porthole we arrived in Bonaire to stay for a week. Bonaire is a small caribbean island, surrounded by amazing dive sites and with salt flats and flamingoes. We arrived during carnival so I was able to watch a few of the street parades with the glittering costumes and steel pan bands, they get everyone dancing in the streets. Was able to have a couple of days off so I did my Advanced Open Water Dive course with a company right across the road from the [View Full Entry]

Rocky seas, February Crew Activities and preparing for a month of new adventures. Like previously mentioned we are heading to the Southern Caribbean. The Ocean is very rocky tonight and I am feeling very queasy. I am sure that some sea sickness pills and a few Malibu and Pineapples will take care of that. It is very easy to see how people onboard cruise ships develop alcohol problems. When one of the VERY few places that you can go and relax is the Crew Lounge or Crew Bar, and drinks are the price of Phil’s in Waterloo (All of you from [View Full Entry]

Today we’re back in Sint Maarten/Saint Martin. The last time we were here felt forever ago - it was my first port & only 4th day on the ship. That whole first cruise is just a big blur. Brooks & I were spoiled with another free excursion today. This time it was the Explorer Island Tour and it took us around pretty much the entire island: from Philipsburg, to Orient Bay, around Pic Paradis, to Marigot, around the entire lagoon by boat, to Simpson Bay Village and back to Philipsburg again. It was fantastic to get to see so much of [View Full Entry]

Isnt that a wicked T-Shirt?!
I was so lucky. I had time to go on shore again. This time as an escort on a passenger shore excursion. Free of charge! ;-) It was a short 20 min ride to Orient Bay Beach, crossing from the dutch part of the island named St. Maarten over to the french part named Saint Martin. I spent a little over two hours at that lovely beach. Relaxing in the shadow of a beach umbrella ($3) and listening to the the waves. Free fruit punch and a dip in the sea made the excursion a definite success. Cool & lovely! [View Full Entry]

This was my second trip to visit Sarah in St. Maarten in two months so I'm not posting too many St. Maarten pics. We did, however, fly to a couple of neighbouring islands so it was still a new experience. We flew to the French Island of St. Barts (Saint Barthelemy) for a day so that Sarah could re-enter St. Maarten on her Dutch passport and save the school from paying for her work visa. The school paid for her flight so it was pretty easy to say yes. We flew to St. Barts in a 19-seat DHC Twin-Otter which is [View Full Entry]

Another little paradise is St. Maarten Island. Half owned by the French and the other half the Dutch. For this adventure Linda and I signed up for a drive your self-jeep tour of the island. Whatever kind of vehicle they were they were much classer than a jeep. Linda and I ended up with one all to ourselves as the group was two short. We went as a caravan and we each had a radio that our American guide would tell us to turn left, right etc. None of us got lost and we had no accidents. This was more like [View Full Entry]
