Background: Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. The island of Saint Martin is shared with France; its southern portion is named Sint Maarten and is part of the Netherlands Antilles; its northern portion is called Saint-Martin and is part of Guadeloupe (France).

We left Barbuda at first light and had a beautiful trip to St. Martin. The wind and seas were calm and the fishing was amazing!!! We caught 3 yellowfin tuna along the way- which is awesome! It definitely was the best fishing day all year. Unfortunately we haven’t caught much fish in the Caribbean. Most of the time it is too windy and thus we are too busy sailing to throw out a line. But even when we have been trolling we have hardly caught anything, not even a nibble. So to land 3 tuna in one day was a record [View Full Entry]

I’ve been wanting to get out on a tour and Jody and I decided to do one together in St. Maarten today. His only request was that it was something to do with water. As luck had it, today a crew tour was happening so we managed to get on that. It was the America’s Cup Regatta, one I’ve done before and loved. Today was no exception. So much fun! For the America’s Cup Regatta excursion, you get the chance to race on actual regatta racing yachts. Down on the pier, we were split into two teams: one that would be [View Full Entry]

So I guess I have two things to write about. I'll do so in two posts. I've been getting quite a few emails from Mom asking about the boat show so I guess I should post about it. Unfortunately I have almost nothing to write about. The boat show is a very exclusive event. It's easier to get in to Chretien's bedroom then it is to get into the boat show but I guess that isn't saying much. The four day event is not open to the public at all. It would apparently even be unusual to see another person on [View Full Entry]

Days 1-3: St. Maarten/St. Martin -- February 16-18, 2007 What can you say about a month out of the cold? We’re good at being snowbirds? How about we went sailing on a big boat, err, ship in the French West Indies? I think everyone has a little bit of a pirate spirit in them and sailing on a Windjammer ship is a good way to bring that out! One thing Windjammer employees will tell you is that “this ain’t no foo foo ship”...I am guessing it’s a jab at those huge floating cities we see in [View Full Entry]

On thursday morning I woke up and decided it was time to get up. I climb bed out of bed and stumbled into the common area and lied down there to have a nap. Steph's phone started to ring and whoever it was just kept calling and calling knowing someone would eventually pick it up. Finally I got fed up, woke her up and gave her her phone. Five minutes later I had day work. Apparently they needed a couple people on really short notice and knew that there would be plenty of people at the crew house ready to go. [View Full Entry]

Yeah mom, I'm still alive. There really isn't much to post about. The bridge into the lagoon has been down for repairs since I got here and it's not supposed to be up for another week. As a result, there are no boats in the lagoon and subsequently no work for anyone. It's supposed to pick up pretty soon since the boat show is coming up. One issue we face as well is that you can't dockwalk. For those who don't know what that is, it's where you just walk around all the marinas during the day and talk to people [View Full Entry]

Alright, So I guess it is time for another post. Pictures forthcoming. We'll start with the rest of the course. Most of the course has been a lot of common sense stuff they have to teach you anyways however we did get to do some fun things like practising with the life rafts and immersion suits. To do this, we went to a pool and had to jump in and tread water for 15 minutes. We weren't allowed to just wear a bathing suit and had to wear normal clothes since that would probably be the case in a real emergency. [View Full Entry]

Thank you to all our veterans today~ Michael John, Uncle Don and anyone else that has served us. We are so grateful to you! Yesterday we did enjoy our happy hour at sunset on the top deck. The pictures are beautiful and I will share with you soon. After dinner we went to bed; we want to be rested for St Maarten. We had breakfast on the back deck and then went back to our room to pack our backpack for the day. We walked off the ship and wandered around the pier for awhile. We are to meet Happy Harry [View Full Entry]

I'm pretty busy right now so I can't do a full post however I'll put up some updates. I shall call it "And now, some questions from Mom" "First off what do you think of the course, are you learning new stuff or is it same old same old?" The first aid was kind of useless. I thought it would be oriented somehow to a marine environment however it was just another first aid course which by now is quite routine and identical to the last. The Emergency survival was pretty good. It was mostly common sense however it did include [View Full Entry]
