Background: Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. The island of Saint Martin is shared with France; its southern portion is named Sint Maarten and is part of the Netherlands Antilles; its northern portion is called Saint-Martin and is part of Guadeloupe (France).

We stayed a little too long in Peurto la Cruz Venezuela after hurricane Felix kissed Bonaire, our next main island. Finally we got out to the Venezuelan offshore island, and the were georgous. Fantastic water, snorkelling, diving, fishing and eating. Eventually getting to Bonaire, we were in divers paradise on an island that got the nature preserve idea early on. There waters are totally protected and provide over 150 marked dive sites and we made the most of it every day for 2 weeks. Now in Curacou, we wait another window in the weather to head down the Columbian coast to [View Full Entry]

As a matter of principle, we must feature Curacao. The trip started there, we will pass thru it at least three times before we say 'goodbye' and, not least of all, we lived there for a year or so. Plus, our friends and fans and history would not forgive us. The island is bright and cheerful in most parts. It is the kind of place where people are not afraid to paint their homes and businesses in the brightest combinations of colours. Curacao is a small Dutch Caribbean island located 40 miles from the west coast of Venezuela. It is a [View Full Entry]

Someone, sometime long, long ago, decided that the center of Willemstad, the capital, was the ideal place to situate an oil refinery. Maybe it was because a natural deepwater harbour was located here or maybe someone thought that upper respiratory tract infection would be trendy for the locals in 2007. We think the former was the reason and that the latter was an unfortunate side effect. The Isla refinery, formerly owned by Shell who sold it to the government for USD 1, is now a Venezuelan concern. Its furnaces and phallic chimneys belch black smoke high into the air and spew [View Full Entry]

I guess you can say that this is a lemon-to-lemonade type story. We both quit our jobs for similar reasons and faced with the prospect of being unemployed, we decided to do something we had dreamt and spoken about ... a world tour. With the decision made, we jumped into setting the priorities. We decided on the places to visit -> from Cuba to Australia and most everywhere in between. We'll swim in the turquiose waters of Aruba, soak up the majesty of Kaieteur Falls in Guyana and sleep in the lush hinterlands of Surinam, admire the lights of Times Square, [View Full Entry]

It was my boyfriend's dream as a kid to swim with Dolphins. So to make his dream come true I've been doing research and found this site www.dolphin-academy.com. It is located at Sea Aquarium Curacao (Southern Caribbean), which was great! There are different programs, depending on your age, budget and what you prefer. Pregnant women can only participate in the Dolphin Encounter Program. Before all the activities, you will receive instructions from the trainers. Customers must fill in an assumption of risk waiver before the activity of: Dolphin Swim and Dolphin Snorkel. You must get there [View Full Entry]

We went to Curacao between 30Aug06 and 05Sep06 straight after the amazing trip to Aruba. Curacao looks similar to Amsterdam with all the colorful buildings! There is a floating market at Willemstad they sale fishes, fruit and vegetables as well! There are 2 must-visit beaches called: 1. Porto Marie - there is a small entrance fee, USD3 per person including 1 soft drink from the bar. But on the weekend is USD6 per person this also include 1 soft drink. This beautiful beach is perfect for snorkeling, swimming and diving. We actually bought our own snorkeling gear so we didn’t [View Full Entry]

Curacao

Ok, we're not in Curacao as the header says, we're actually in Bonaire which isn't listed on this thing.....but Curacao is only just across the water! So, it's been an eventful four days and lots of fun. Started out at 4am at Heathrow, where we queued for an hour at check-in, followed by over an hour at security. Lorna got the opportunity to strike a pose after looking dodgy enough to be asked to be a guinea pig for the new body scanning machine. Thankfully, this meant that she got to jump the queue and had time to buy fluids and [View Full Entry]

This is the view as you leave the entrance to Habitat. You can see the Cathedral in St. Willibrordus.
Having spent one last day snorkeling and diving, including our first night dive ever, we spent our last day in Curacao exploring the rest of the island. We started the day heading to the northeast portion of the island to the Ostrich and Game Farm. Although we didn't take the tour, it is the largest ostrich farm outside Africa. We did eat lunch there at the African restaurant Zambezi, which is an open-air restaurant covered by a thatch roof. The food was great! Paul had ostrich and I had a spicy pumpkin soup. After the Ostrich Farm, we spent most of [View Full Entry]

Today we decided to explore the island's dive sites via clown car. We purchased a "drive and dive" map of Curacao and then talked with the dive master at Habitat. She pointed us to some great dives!
