Had a nice mix of work and play today. Arrived at the health centre nice and early at 8:15 am (I was the 2nd staff member there!) and quickly got stuck into work helping to organise the patients and hand out appointment numbers etc. The Doctor didn't turn up yesterday so we were very busy today with patients that were returning, luckily we had 2 Doctors today to help with the increased patient load. I assisted with the curative clinic as usual, taking blood sugars and helping to interview and assess the patients, I also observed 5 different dressings, an amputation, 2 c-sections, an abscess on the leg and an injury on the sole of a foot where a fragment had been taken out. Some of them were really nice and gross! :D I promptly left ... read more

What we did Mystic Mountain Zipline Here is a big operation that also runs places in Costa Rica and other countries. That, however, gives you the assurance that they know how to do a zipline. We started on a chairlift up the mountain. You could make a day of it up there with their cafe, small museum, hummingbird garden, nature trail (restricted to those with a guide only unfortunately), and waterslide. However, we had a specific pick-up time so we got right to zipping. Talking to others, the famous Jamaican Bobsled ride was not worth it - too short. We enjoyed the ziplines and got to see the Bobsleds beneath us. The guides we had were really professional and great for us (afraid of heights and all). We did five ziplines, plus belayed down a tree, ... read more

Arrived in Mo Bay at the airport. Straight into a local route taxi, 8 seats, 15 Jamaicans and I. Cosy but friendly... the taxi ended up in central Montego bay which I'd initially been warned off away drop as I'm a solo white gyal! I can see why I've been warned off. No other tourists in this area and the locals are much more aggressive than if you were further out of town, I don't know wether this is because they're fighting for business or because they're not used to seeing a westerner walking around there so freely. Not much to do or see so headed straight up the hills to the Hostel. Beautiful place with some of the biggest houses I've ever seen. The rest of the stay at Mo bay was pretty mundane, not ... read more

Needing some rest and relaxation we went all the way and spent a few days at Sandals Ochos Rios (http://www.sandals.com/main/ochorios/or-home /, http://www.sandals.com/main/plantation/rp-home/). We had a great time - these guys are top notch. It was the first time we did 100% R&R - no tourism, no adventure travel, no problems. Just beach, pool, amazing restaurants, and fun water sports. Happy New Year's! (2014 - 2015): https://youtu.be/i5j0WZAogrk https://youtu.be/YgO8jqnagXQ -> sounds like a baby crying...hm. A few highlights: the resort is small and private. I think it had only 50 rooms. There was always plenty of seating on the beach and in t... read more

Negril ... read more

It's been way too long since I blogged, but here we go again trying to catch-up on our travels. I wish I could start a blog by saying "so we've been planning this trip for a while". The truth of the matter is that we never plan any trips. We know when we are going to take time off, but generally we don't book plane tickets until about a week or two out. Skyscanner is probably my most favorite app in the world. Plug in departing airport, put in your travel dates and it will give you prices for any and all countries for your selected dates. Anything under $1,000 is acceptable and then wherever we do not need a visa. Jamaica it was this time. About 3 days before departure we booked tickets and the ... read more

I think someone had Jamaicans in mind when the word cool was first defined in the English language. For a tropical country in the Caribbean, there seems to be cool ice running through their veins. These cats are the real deal; and the reggae rhythms, the fist bumps, the languid strides, and the easy rapport of Jamaicans are really starting to win me over. I had a level of apprehension before flying into Kingston, but now that I have settled in and had the chance to explore some of this magical island I'm beginning to understand the great appeal the tropical island of Jamaica has for so many travellers from around the world. The commutes are effortless, cheap and well organised, and the accommodation options and commitment to customer service make Jamaica an island to put ... read more

This is Jamaica man. The home of Bob Marley and a bunch of super cool rasta cats, and it's long been my dream to visit the legendary island in the Caribbean. Part of the appeal for a boy from Oz is the sheer enormity of getting over here from Australia, it's difficult to find a location as exotic or far flung. If an Australian wants to visit the beach, well basically just jump in your car and the majority of the population will be by the sea in a jiffy. Alright then, but if a location more tropical is on the cards South East Asia is also on our doorstep. A visit to Bali, Thailand, and other resort meccas are a short flight from home. So what was it that propelled me to fly for almost ... read more

Today we return to Miami for a couple of days to do a little shopping and to catch up with some friends we met on another trip. Our journey from Montego Bay airport to the hotel took about two and a half hours when we arrived here on Tuesday, so with that in mind we have booked our transfer back to the airport for 6.30am for our 11.30am flight. Our chef from the previous evening was waiting for us when we appeared from our tree house in his current multipurpose role as overnight security guard. The help he gave with the bags was very much appreciated for the short distance between our room and the hotel entrance. This being Jamaica, our lift to the airport did not arrive until about 7.00 am, so we had plenty ... read more

As we were leaving St Maarten, George noticed what we thought was a rather large animal / critter bite on his stomach. It looked red and very angry, but at the time, did not hurt too much. Once we were settled into our Jamaican hotel on Wednesday, we made a visit to a local pharmacy and he diagnosed that it was possibly an allergic reaction to a bite and gave some steroid cream to put on it. The shop also helped us with some other counter products for this too. Over the last couple of days, the original bite area site has grown viciously and rapidly from his stomach around to his left hand spine in some very nasty deep oozing red blistered areas. It feels very sore, is preventing sleep and carries an intense bruised ... read more
